The fresh water issue: you have stated that you will be cruising the East Coast, therefore, land and fresh water are never far away. Just take some jerry cans with you each time you go ashore. Make it a habit.
Also, purchase one of those universal tap tops from a hardware store and carry it in your pack.

Age considerations: you haven't given an indication of your age. Not prying, I'm not ageist, however, if you're planning on playing the long game, choose a boat that you will still be able to handle when you're older.
As an ageing small person with a cornucopia of back problems, 10m is my limit. I do have a Milwaukee right angle drill with a winch bit for raising the main and sheeting on the headsail, however, it sits in a locker unused. I simply don't need it (yet) on a 10 metre boat.

I echo other's advice about getting amongst the social racing and crewing on a range of boats. Different perspectives will teach you the right and wrong ways of doing things. Plus you will make friends and have a brains trust to help you when you do buy your own boat.

Woohoo. 59yo 170cm 73kg. Fit as a Mallee Bull, full check up 90 days ago. I work in an industry that requires physical labour. No heath issues ever. Now is the time. A need to live aboard. I will be doing this for 6 years. After that I'll probably explore our continent out of water, or buy a bigger boat. However, I can change My mind anytime and still be ok. I'm over morgage traps, high energy cost and everything that goes with it. I have a plan to do as I wish, and I will.

Stupid lucky to be alive (fitness helps) and surely woulda been worm food doing any of the things I love doing.
So I spent 3 hours mountain biking today, will again tomorrow, make every day count.

I like the plan.
I'm thinking about pretty much the same and if i can just figure out how to drop my motorcycle in & out to transport with me.
It would be perfect.
sail up the coast and take some time in a port ride around & enjoy both .

Actimax, I will be going electric, foldable. I have to sell, two motorcycles, a campervan, all my gardening hardware, 10 man tents, swags, chairs, tables. Pretty much the kichen sink. How much do we collect in our lifetimes? Incredible burden... All these things can clutter up your life, and freedom. Oh, this post was about sailing the East Coast? Har.

I have a 37ft boat that my partner and I have lived aboard for the last few years full time. East coast, Solomons, PNG, INdo.
Not full keel though and maybe not a great beginners boat.
We might be putting her on the market soon though.

Nice. I've seen your fantastic videos. We'll if I did buy your boat I'm certain that you would take Me sailing twice, lol. I love your content. Did your realy just jump aboard with very little experience on your previouse vessel? More power to you, your one of a few that has inspired Me onward. But the boat, how is it hard to sail with all lines running back to the cockpit, sounds fundemental if one is doing a lot of work shorthanded? Oh, I forgot your Lady who I'm sure contributes muchly. I love the boat, probably out of My price range however. I've been having conversations with another member who has quite a bit of experience and He reakons the hardest part, traveling, exploring is not the sailing, it's mooring thats the biggest challenge. After you sell, I hope you continue with your adventures, most inspirational I must say.

One thing to add, if your sailing the East Coast, then a shoal draft is nice to get a wider time window availability over the river bars. Helps with fatigue if short-handed doing coastal hops.
