Yes HG I did all that, probably 3 times I gave it a good dose of WD40. I did get it off so it must have worked.
Ramona, I think you are very right, However, as they say 'needs must' but I was careful and access to the area is not a problem and I didn't really need to 'swing' the hammer But I did need to open up the coupling a little to 'break' the grip the rust had made. None of the bolts were a problem, they all came out easily enough but for the life of me I couldn't break the seal.......until I put the wedge in and gave it a good tap. I'm not 'recommending' HG goes about it like that, but it worked for me.
I work on difficult seized bolts ,nuts removing bolts out of threaded holes most days as part of my job but still not looking forward this the coupling . The best thing I wont charge my self or tell myself Ive taken to long to do it .
HG02 said.. Ill have another look at the coupling today probably start spraying it with some CRC / WD40
WD40 has about as much use on a boat as does a product like Silastic, both useless. A much better alternative to WD40 is Inox, a product that does not dry out like WD40 does.

Best is 50:50 acetone and automatic transmission fluid.

Ill brew some up tomorrow
Acetone will evaporate in no time at all and leave behind the ATF which does not have as good a penetrating effect as diesel fuel.
It works I assure you. Yes the acetone evaporates and leaves just a vegetable lubricant. Ideal for hinges around the house! I have used it to separate rusted items on marine engines.
