For many people, killing fish is a sport - a family pastime. People invest thousands of dollars on boats and fishing gear and go out and indiscriminately kill fish - there are TV programs devoted to showing us how to do it more efficiently.
Why is it the shark (which is responsible for killing humans) should be afforded greater rights?

I agree, that is the point. We are a free Rambo country and legislation supports this free spirit. We can kill any fish we want as it is considered lifestyle or even sport. Let's learn from the US and go back to owning guns so we can also shoot those who we believe pose a threat to us, like someone walking to close to our property or over our kite lines. Boom.
And with regards to WA tourism, what horse ****e is it to believe that wiping out a few sharks gets us more tourists. Maybe the odd Asian who picks up the shark fin personally. But the larger crowd spending a lot of $ is not going to come simply because they disagree to what is going on here, they will bring their money elsewhere.
Yeah I know, fenk them, we want it for ourselves, and we want to destroy it ourselves as we get a stiffy by doing things for the sake of being able to. Science is too difficult for most of the population. And the media and politics is tageted at the majority of the population. So I see little hope, unless we vote for the right people and they do their job financing research and educating people, by means of media, schools etc.
Maybe one day...

Nice attitude and respect towards the place you use as a playground. That's the problem these days... it's all "me, me, me.". If you can't handle the risk, don't go in the water.

I have no problem going in the water you keyboard warrior beebee - im more concerned for the thousands of other casual water users, divers, surfers ect... Sharks are just fish & need to be controlled like all other animals that are controlled out there - wild pigs, roos, rabbits, horses, foxes - why dont you go & save them ???
Sharks eat harmless sealife out there - dolphins, dugongs & sea turtles. They are a PEST - fish stocks are basically f&cked because they have been protected since 2000. We are not killing ALL sharks - just those that swim into our territory - YES OUR territory - since when is it ok for a shark to kill a human ? I just hope that the meat is put to good use & sold locally - back in the day flake was sold at all fish & chip shops - with tomato sauce & chips on white bread you cant beat it !

Will any of the anti-brigade here address the established science on Qld drum lining?

Try and remain objective instead of emotional in your replies.

Well, that was probably the best argument I've heard in this nationwide debate. Well done Kiterboy! Good to see some actual data.
I personally still feel that more studies are warranted (and I would prefer them done elsewhere), but I now feel better about the drum lines as I was pretty negative about them when they were mentioned.

and whoever said we can put a man on the moon but cant deter sharks from our beaches..good stuff... cant find the quote..

and default..".. it's not entirely accurate to say there is no science behind the decision to try manage white shark numbers locally. There is plenty of local anecdotal evidence to suggest there is a significant increase in white shark numbers (which include deaths) and they are not endangered at all. "

spot on
