Any chance the hordes doing downwinders can give the windsurfing area at Scarbs a miss ? Just pop around the outside for 100m or so.

Getting sick of dodging lines , giving up waves due to downed kite lines clogging up the break, having kites crash around me. I havent been line wrapped this year - but have been in the past..

Most days we are also getting the 2 guys kites tangled up in each others lines float through as well - just for good measure.

Some of the experienced locals riding the section just up wind are absolutely no problem (Niall and his big airs and slays are a pleasure to witness) but there is some serious (unintended mostly) kook action possibly from Tueros / learners frustrating the local windsurf crew now and then. Maybe a bit of education would help?

Most crew are fine - but by the sheer volume of crew coming through there is a consistent background incidence of break cloggery.

There was a guy on a blue kite constantly blowing jumps and crashing / luffing his kite for about 2 hours - surely he just wasnt aware of our self managed exclusion zone?

Kiters using this area obviously should take into account the increase potential for an incident and accident with windsurfers by staying clear allowing separation and eliminating any potential to drift through the line up , providing freedom for all to do there thing.

So if a windsurfer hits a kite surfer it's the kite surfers fault? I get it now, what a total crock of sh1t....only in WA I guess....

Its xmas day and im going windsurfing with approx 50 plus others and approx 20 kiters if yesterday was any indication , so im guessing you could probably call it a WA thing only if you could show understand but hey glad your reading the post ...............now crack a can xxxx and go learn how to stuff a turkey

Last time out at the Pacific beach in summer, every time I jumped there was one windsurfing guy kept shouting "LOOP! LOOP!" at me! Pretty cute, cos Japanese people don't really speak English at all...

Nah, I'm pretty safe out there - I know how sensitive the pole dancers are, so try to stay out of their and give them an extra wide berth... some interaction is inevitable though, especially when the fools think it's awesome to zoom past upwind, gybe just in front of you then fall over in your path. Ain't nobody got time for that!

This isnt about exclusivity - Scarbs is generally a terrible place to sail - but the only option for those of us locked in to Perth for work and family reasons.

Having said that it does throw up a cool wind wave when the wind is 23 knots plus.

Having some dude or man come out and gybe onto the wave you re coming in on is all to common.


9 out of 10 kitecrew are fine - its the 10%ers that screw it up - and when you have 100 crew coming through that means that we have 10 nongs to deal with. Unfortunately the frustration is universal at Scarbs with the local windsurfers. All having some sort of run in day in day out with drop ins , uneducated wave priority situations, downed lines ,getting hit or wrapped in kite lines or suffering damage due to unmanned boards roaming through the break.

Its a tiny stretch of the downwind run.


Thanks for taking note - glad to see that the likes of Paul1 and slavery dont really speak for the majority here. Obviously having some difficulty with analysis of a situation with more than 1 variable.

This isnt a witch hunt or us vs them thing. I'd happily ride with the educated / skilled / respectful kite crew all day long.

I'm relatively new to down winders, have now done 5 or 6 this summer. I find the most perilous part is passing through the static in and out spots, be they poleys or tea baggers. The dynamics and movement is totally different. I just head out deep to avoid a possible conflict at Brighton, Scarbs, Trigg etc.

And I understand what reflex is saying, when you are doing in and out and a swarm of down winders comes through its quite confusing for a numpty like me, hard to read where the swarm is going.

Bizarre thread really. As a learner doing down winders on the east coast I deliberately avoid all other people in the surf, swimmers, kiters, surfers, boats . If Scarbs was a 100m hotspot full of windsurfers I would stay out of the way??? It sounds like the kite surfers doing this arent new learners but kooks. Blokes who have been doing it for some time and think there good when there only as good as they will ever get. Kooks, there everywhere and unfortunately a perfectly reasonable post like the 1st one in this thread will be ignored by the very people its directed at.
