We might be better off in the morning gruzitski, arvo could be a bit psycho if there are lots of squalls, but the pre front wind could be the better choice.

can you launch and land the ion2 off a sand bag or fixed object??

dclark,

you can relaunch just like a c, with sand over the wing tip, or it's pretty easy to self launch without sand on the wingtip at all, bow style. Just set up with the kite near the edge of the window and pull the wingtip around so it catches the wind. It will pretty much stand up by itself from there. Just practice with plenty of downwind room and on sand.

matt from flexifoil said launching and landing using a fixed object can be done via the mini fifth line.

Not sure what you mean by launcing off a fixed object then?

But I use either of those techniques

- ah yeh I know what you mean.

It can be done for sure. But I personally feel this method is very risky. If the kite gets some sort of gust or someone or something trips over your lines the kite takes off and no one is at the bar to activate any safety system. If you have no one around you, nothing that will get in your way then maybe it's not too bad, but if something goes wrong it can get ugly quick. That being said, it can be done.

As regards self launching/landing I think the video link earlier is a bit daft... the flexifoil will sit beautifully at the edge of window just off the safety leash (not the chicken loop) which you can attach to any fixed object. Even in gusty conditions kite is stable this way and I have never seen it roll back across the window.

is this for real????? i have a 12.5m coming my way...

12.5m kites purchased between 1st May 2007 and 30th June 2007 have had the front toggles sewn at 30 degrees off from the correct orientation which causes a reduction in strength when flown in 5 line mode. No problems have been found with kites flown in 4 line mode. Please note that no other sizes of Ion2 in the range are affected.

If you intend to use your kite in 5 line mode, or want to take up the offer of the free modification, please return your kite only (no bag/bar/lines/pump) to your closest Flexifoil Repair Centre where a reinforcement will be added to take the 5th line loads in one of two ways...

Two modification options:

1. Fast-fix - a fast modification for demanding riders. You will be able to see that the kite has been fixed, but you will receive your kite back within 10 working days.

2. Flexifoil-Quality-Fix - a more involved modification which will be un-noticeable to the untrained eye, but will take up to 30 working days.

Please remember to include your full name, address and phone number with the package and to include a receipt for your postage costs. Once your kite is ready to be returned to you the Flexifoil Repair Centre will call you to arrange for reimbursement of your postage costs.

Kites should be sent to:

Yes unfortunately it is for real.

Fortunately there were only 6 kites in Australia that were affected but this manufacturing error. All the owners of these kites have been contacted already and actions have been taken to modify the kite and return to the owners ASAP.

All 12.5m ION2 kites for sale in Australia currently, do not have this problem as they were made after the manufacturing issue was resolved.

If you have any queries or would like to double check that your kite is not then please PM me with your kites serial number and I will look up its build date for you to confirm.

This issue has effected the US and Europe more as they had their kite sent from the first batch. As Australia was out of season we only managed to get a few from the first batch.

Cheers

Matt

PS I would just like to add that the issue occurred only when the kites were flown in 5th line mode on the low wind settings. Flying in 4 line mode is not an issue, nor is flying in 5th line mode on the hi wind settings.

i have had another 4 or 5 good powered days on my 12.5 now. my only issues so far are.

only issue im having with it at the moment is relaunch. its much more difficult than my old waroo.

depower also is no where near the instant dump of power feeling i got from the waroo.

still these are minor issues as the float, height and stability when unhooked are much better than my old kite.

With regards to depower, the max depower is only available on the hi wind settings. If things get hairy then pop the release as the kite is stable (and very depowered) when released to the front lines. The release is simple enough to rebuild with one hand

The relaunch is not the simplest but with a few tricks it is easy and fairly quick. The only time that is not so straightforward is when the kite is nose down straight downwind. To relaunch grab the top of the depower strap by the swivel and pull and release (depending on wind strength may have to move towards the kite to do this) to let the kite move onto its back then sheet in and point the bar at the kite and it will start to move to the side of the window, sheet out a bit to launch.

just for anyone thats interested...i flew my 12.5 in 5th line mode yesterday. I have never flown a C kite or 5th line kite before either. the wind at the start was 9kts and got up to about 18-20kts

took a fair while to change. I could have pumped up another kite and been on the water quicker.

low end is better than in 4 line mode. it was 9-13kts when i first got out and i was going upwind on a 130cm 555 board.

top end was a lot lower, probably 5kts less than in 4 line mode.

jumps and transitions were no where near as high compared to 4 line mode. this can be improved with a bit of practice im sure.

relaunch was much much easier and the kite looked and felt a lot more stable in the air. the kite also backstalled much less when the bar was fully sheeted in.

still havent decided if i like 5 line or 4 line mode better..
