Righto so I've got myself a 10 rebel and have had it for about 2 months. Really good kite!!!
So I'm looking at getting a bigger rebel. Don't know wether I should go the 13 or 14 rebel. Was thinking the 14 as I can get my hands on one. Plus will be looking at a smaller rebel either 7 or 8 but probably get more use out of an 8

Get a 14 man, seeing your going that big already you may aswell go the whole shebang with an extra meter square, after 12 meters I find you get diminishing returns anyway and there won't be a whole lot difference between the two. Having the 14 up will guarantee that if you can't fly, trust me you won't want to in any less wind as you may aswell be out the back yard mowing your back lawn and getting browny points with the misses.

now 7 vs 8 is a trickier one considering you have a 10. Depends how comfortable you are being over powered with the 8 in storm fronts or over powered with your 10 when your 7 won't fly..
Thats more a personal choice.

I'd go the 7 ;) the rebels have monster bottom ends.

Ah ok cool. Or maybe the 12? I can ride my 10 from about 14 up to 30 maybe little over. I'm pretty comfy riding kites over powered. Is there anyone that has rode the bigger rebels and the smaller ones aswell?

I've got the '12 7M, i'm 75kg's and rate this kite highly

I pump it up at 25knts and it can handle a heap of wind with no depower as i have long arms

I use it on heavy bar setting on 20m lines

It is really stable and doesn't shoot forward and back in gusts

Depowers really quick for ripping turns off the lip without being pulled off the rail

I could go on but these are the main reasons i like it so much

Glad ya stoked on the kite, yeh it's a ripper. I reckon 14m rebel would turn way too slow, also would pick up an enormous amount of apparent wind grunt. They already pivot turn with loss of power, can't imagine anything bigger than my 11m. I reckon there are better kites out there at these sizes for lighter winds.

What about a BWS noise in a 12m

I would be interested to see hear how the 13 goes? I didnt know North made a 13 Rebel until I read your post. I have read the odd review/article on the 14m but never a 13m, in fact I dont think I have seen a 13m Rebel flying.
I used to have a 9/12 combo several years ago and I didnt go a 14 as it was too slow for my liking, but I did need the extra low end for Sydney's Northern Beaches more often than I care to admit.
A 13/10/7 combo sounds awesome.

the north rebels come in every size 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 hence why its a hard choice on what one to get. i was tossing up on the 10 and 11 a while ago and the 11 was different power delivery to the 10 but i went the 10 and havent looked back. plenty of power in it for me.

hey bris kites maybe would it be that i just go the 14m? i think the 7 should be good and that the 8 would be to close to the 10. my mate who weighs 85-90kgs had a go on a 7m rebel in about 22ish knots seabreeze and he was going fine.

when they offer every size you could think of it becomes hard getting the right kite lol

Well I fly a 2012 11m rebel and I wouldn't want it to turn any slower nor have any more grunt. Horses for courses I suppose.

Well I fly a 2012 11m rebel and I wouldn't want it to turn any slower nor have any more grunt. Horses for courses I suppose.

13/10/7 is a sweet quiver. I have one and I'm the same weight. Only issue I have is the 10 is such a nice kite that I don't appreciate the 13 as much as I should. That said, the 13 has heaps of low end so I wouldn't want to go to the 14.

Yeh true I just think there are kite designs that better fulfill the light wind quiver. But I get your point saffer.

Personally I'd go a bigger board if I wanted to go larger than a 13m. That said, I'm already tempted to get a nugget or sector so I can get on to the 10m sooner so that's an alternative as well. Cheaper than a 3 kite quiver and likely to have the same bottom end as well.

I have 6 ,8 ,10 ,16m Dyno for light/light days AS others my most used is my 10 but my favourite is 8m and i love the 6m when iam out there and others are on the beach watching Note for my main kites 10,8m i up grade each year the others every 2/3 year ALSO 20m lines are sick for waves etc Enjoy rebels cheers

I have only used 16m 3 times this summer' thank god' only use when desperate for a fix Have note tryed other big kites i try to stay with one brand re bar and lines

which is what i did instead of getting a bigger kite . the sector enabled me to stick with my 10.5 and 13.5 obsession and at 100kg it pretty much covers me from 10-mid twenties wind strength

Two very different boards. I compared the Nugget to the North Freerace, but I think the Sector is a better choice if you go the freerace direction. The North Freerace is still a little more surfey so its probably mid way between a Sector and a Nugget.

The Sector would definitely have the edge on bottom end but the nugget would be more at home in the surf and free riding which includes jumps. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I know people who have both and all of them love their boards so I don't think you'd be disappointed with either, just two very different styles of boards. This may be one of those cases where there is no way to decide without demoing to see which style you prefer.

I'd still go 7 if you go with the 14. The 3m gap is easy to do with the 10m. There is plenty of low end on the 7m.

The other consideration is whether you get a second bar with 20m lines as your backup. This will drop the effective size by 1m. I.e. your 10m becomes a 9m, your 7m becomes a 6m and your 14/13 becomes a 13/12m.

righto so i got a ride on a 14 rebel and a 8 rebel. the 14 rebel would have been in around 12 to 18 knots and seemed to go great was abit slow but you get that with a bigger kite.

the 8m was so much fun and im thinking an 8 instead of a 7 as i dont think ill ever max the 7 out plus the 8 would see more use. i had the 8 out in around 20+ knots

so not to worried about the 7/8 choice. but 13/14 well.....

i was looking on the north website and with the kites 8 through to 13 are all the same aspect ration that the 14 it slightly different (5.0 and the 14 is 5.1) can anyone explain this to me and would this make much of a difference?

all in all if i was thinking the 13 should i just go 14 as its so close blah blah blah

you will never have the right size kites unless you have them all You need to check was sizes are used the most in you area AND take a chance This season i used my 10M.2011 season i used 11M but could of used a 12M /2010year a 9m Wind is a bitch GOOD LUCK

I have a few thoughts on better light wind kiting. I suggest if you have a 10m, your next bigger kite should be a 17m otherwise there is too much overlap. A 10m Rebel will get a 90 kilo rider riding upwind comfortably in 15 knots, to get down to the bottom end you are talking about, you need to really go a lot bigger, hence the 17m.

Look at the wind ranges of a 17m, generally 10-20knots for a TT. This allows a 5 knot overlap with your 10m. You do fall into that law of diminished return when going bigger, so to really maximize your water time, I'd go the 17m option if you are looking at kites. If you add a Sector or raceboard to a 17m kite, then you delve into a world of kiting known to few. It is tricky stuff requiring good skills, but winds as light as 7 knots are not only doable, but can be fun. These big kites don't relaunch in 7 knots!

To gain much better bottom end without the kite upgrade, the Sector or race boards are the answer. A Sector 60 will give you a 5 knot bottom end advantage over a twintip. Problem is with the Sectors is you can't really jump them and that flat water riding is only really fun if you have mates who can ride with you, unless you are a loner. They don't really work in the surf, they don't carve well enough to be useful on a wave, the rocker is too flat, and if those fins come at you propelled by a wave, it is akin to being chased by Freddy Kreuger.

The North Nugget is a surf board designed to get you out in the surf in as light wind as possible and still have maximum surfing fun in small and junky waves. The Nugget is very agile, fast, can be jumped and is a hoot with no straps. It's a good freestyle surfer. Grab rails all round, for airs and board flips etc.

The 17m kites won't get much of a run over a decent WA summer, whereas a Nugget will get you on the water first in clean (ish) surf before everyone else and then you can switch up without changing kites once the wind kicks in properly.

There is more ways to skin a cat than you think!

Dazza good to see ya back on the board! What lower end knot advantage would a nugget provide? Sector you say 5 knots, where would the nugget sit? And yeh the guy in the vid was jumping okay - maybe that's a highly technical thing to do on these boards.

Nugget does seem more versatile...

sound advice I 100% Agree I am making boards in vic and was thinking of nugget shape but may be 5'5" with turtul boxes so you can have choice of wave fins or larger race fins for the big kites Note board will only weigh aprox 1.7 to 1.9 kg What are your thoughts

Since everyones throwing you ideas of different LW kites heres another to open your mind a little to whats out there....

I chose my 15m Lightwind kite firstly because it is specifically designed for Lightwinds 8 - 14knots Twin Tip with a 4 knot relaunch at a true 15knots you should be using your 10 obviously..

Dont be fooled by brand Hype...

For example its common knowledge amongst experienced kiters that if someone designs a 10m kite specifically to be good at a certain style of riding - it does not automatically mean that you can just make a bigger or smaller version and expect it to be its equivalent...

So having said this, use the lowest windrange youd like to kite in, be your specific focus point etc

The Epic Infinity LW kite I use is an allround fun machine with light bar pressure of a 9 or 10m - so you can blast all day on it and not rip your arms out. I throw this kite around like a 12m, jumps tricks you name it - I aint scared to use the bar fishpole style... its all in the timing

Lightwind in general, sucks badly unless your having fun NOT mowing the lawn thats the difference ... Funnability !!!
