Four days Kiting in WA, four weeks after broken foot.

Thanks to Andrash for the microcurrent therapy advice. It hurt like hell but really helped me heal faster, I would recommend it to anyone.

All the rest of you can HTFU

Cheers

Hey Junglist,
I currently have a broken 1st Metatarsal. Commonly causes bone chip with tendon damage as it is the larger metatarsal. I first did it years ago playing soccer, I was put into an aircast but was told to exercise and load bare as long as no pain being caused.

This time I did it only a few weeks ago, I was riding a board with straps for the first time in a long time, normally wear boots, and my feet kept coming out only to have realised at once that I have hurt that joint again. It came with immediate swelling and bruising. I just iced it that night and have strapped it ever since.

I can still ride as long as my foot does not twist or hit anything. If it does the pain goes thru the roof and I have to rest it for a few days. The latest research on this injury is based on English footballers such as Becham and Rooney, they both broke their 5th Metatarsal which is the most common. The research suggests movement, load baring and activity that does not cause pain! If there is pain stop!!! Breaking a metatarsal is the most common injuruy in sport to date!

Strapping works, so go see a phsyio to be taught how to do it and get back riding!

Cheers Chris

Holy f#%k what a tragic story!

Could you have kept it to less than 400 words Chrissy?

I broke my 2nd and 3rd metatarsal kiteing at the start of the year, yeah 6 weeks is bad, (happened peak kiting season for me) i dont want to recommend anything stupid but after 6 weeks it had healed over for me but the pain from bruising/tissue damage was still there, i guess letting the bone(s) heal completely is the most important thing and if you dont mind the leftover aches blah blah blah kiting could be a go.

Exercise your foot with a small weight frequently without strain (stop when hurts), and it will heal quicker and more complete. On the other hand if you keep straining and re-injuring it, you may end up with a nasty scar tissue, that will be a source of more trouble later. Unfortunately, the pressure from the foot straps will not help, and riding strapless on a surfboard holds some risk of re-injuring it.........but sitting at home on a 18kn sunny afternoon is a risk of a nervous break down......so you can't win.[}:)]

hey jung

i broke one of mine when i was 16, but didn't really let it heal and as a consequense i kept breaking it every 4 weeks untill i had to have surgery on it. now it is mechanically reiforced and couldn't be better. my opinion let it heal properly the first time.

Feeling sorry for you. I broke my fifth metartasal in April this year just two weeks before leaving for Mui Ne. . It took me 5 weeks to recover and even then I did not feel to confident going out for high jumps but anyway you should be able to start cruising around again after 6 weeks.

Cheers
