The extra money you save on fuel for the 3ltr you will more than likely spend on an engine rebuild.
I did all the research and still chose the 2005 3ltr, which is past the worst of the engines. But I got one with the full NADS treatment (Nissan Anti Detonation System?) plus some other reliability add-ons which is stuff like:
EGR block
dawes valve
needle valve
pyro/turbo/oil pressure guages
catch can
3" exhaust
Uprated welded intercooler
And a few other bits and pieces.
It's not an ironclad guarantee of no boom, but it's enough for me not to stress.
I would say I get about 450-500kms from the normal tank which is about $70-90 to fill depending on diesel price.
