Great race as I watched from the lookout over Leighton beach as the competitors left Rotto & flew across to Leighton on a perfectly flat Gague roads in light 13/17 knots of wind. The conditions were ideal for the top 4 or 5 pro foilers who finished the race lit up doing at least 30knots and minutes ahead the next pack of foilers who where a couple of minutes ahead of the 1st non foil boards who finished 12th, 13th and 14th. Everyone was stocked on the beach and it was an amazing sight to see on a beautiful sunny WA day. Just a thought after a few riders mentioned this to me on the beach after the race was over - maybe for next year - as we all know that the top foil boards are incredibly fast and totally unbeatable and only available the worlds best riders. And that's cool. But maybe split the foils into their own section and have the surfboard slalom boards in there own section like the twin tips. This would give the weekend warriors and guys who design build there own boards incentive to race their own designs. It's pretty amazing to ride a board you have designed for the race and continue to dream of finishing into top 10. It's easy to see that the foils will dominate more and more in the future and other types of racing boards will disappear. IMO that's a shame. The difference for a rider being being a top line pro foil & board will cost you over $4000 / $5000 and the fastest Mikes Lab foil only available to the top riders in the world. A home made slalom board will cost you $1000 to build- but will take you many many pleasurable hours of personal time to get the board tuned with fins to ride fast for the race. Well done Tim and the team. Also Tim great timing on the wind and also avoiding the massive cargo boat that cruised at 20 knots through the race line around 3pm. Oarsome as usual. JohnnoKeys
PS - I injured my arm so not planning to race in the future
Yes it has turned into a bit of an arms race at the pointy end, the average punter isn't going to stand a chance against pro's with equipment worth many times more but I guess that's racing.
Directional boards that are not foils (i.e. surf/slalom boards) are going to finish at times closer to the TT's than foils in the sort of conditions that we experienced on the weekend.
So perhaps they should be in with them or yes have there own category but how many divisions do you have?
It's not just the foil boards but also the foil kites, they are way more efficient but also way more expensive and for the weekend warrior they are just out of the question but again I guess that is racing.
Whilst there will always be people that just want to do the race/crossing, I think we will start to see numbers drop as the divide gets greater, not sure what can be done about it though.
If it had been run this weekend coming would it have been closer?
Thanks heaps to Tim, the organisers and volunteers for there great effort and organisation.
Whilst I made it across and enjoyed the day, I feel sorry though for the poor kiters that have travelled across the country but couldn't even get of the beach.
