Reading many comments from different topics on our aquatic friends crusing up and down the WA coast.

I do some training runs out with some buddies whcih is not that far out but far enough often think what would it be like floating around for 40 mins spalshing my way back in.

While good gear and doing 25 ks an hour keeps one feeling quite safe, when floundering in the water it quickly evaporates.

i bought two kick pads one for race board and one for surfbaord so i can tansfer it over.

Also family is happy to
its christmas time get one on the list

You can actually use your board with that thing glued to the back??? I'd buy a full face helmet for the trip to the beach before I bought that thing...

So, when it all goes pear shaped and you have to ditch (or you have lost) your board and get to the kite to self rescue, what use is the shark shield?

my plan is to keep board at all times, im not jumping or doing tricks when further out so keeping board close by for floatation is a priority for me.

And yes you can use your board with it attached, but its not for everyone.

Shark Shields have no effect on Great Whites...

If they want you, they will have you..

On smaller sharks such as bronzies they have evidence to suggest they dont like SS. But anything bigger than 2 meters and they will laugh at it...

Agreed. I wasn't sure if they work so this week i did some reading and UniSA did some serious research at the Neptune Islands and found the shark shields had no real influence on GW "interactions" with baits. The shark sheilds didnt deter them

But if it keeps the cook happy and makes you feel safer then it's hard to argue with.

Don't zap yourself mate ! I spent last year teaching people to dive and on the odd occasion another diver wearing a shark shield would cruise past like a big jelly fish and zap my students which made then even more nervous when I'm trying to get them to take their mask off at 17m...

all good comments !!

if a GW is doing 40ks an hour at you, your Arze is grasss, dont even think about it as a saving implement.

if it's is a nosy bastazzrd coming for a look, it does get a shock and it does fek off no question.

its all about reducing the appeal of yourself as its next snack

Any way im happy the cooks happy it does not impede my surfing so all good.

I thought you were joking! Thats what a shark shield looks like, an old school vacuum stuck to your board, i guess if its fair dinkum, then why not, in my opinion, it doesnt look like it will do anything, maybe zapp you, or another sailor, or maybe you'll have trouble launching one time, that outward electrical circuit will become interesting, seriously, if your that scared, or worried about a shark attack to the point were you would put any faith in that thing stuck to your board, then you shouldn't be in the ocean, go sailing in a lake, relax, enjoy man

I must admit I look out in the water a lot more than I used to. Only riding a surfboard I dont go out that far anyway. I check my gear thoroughly before I go out including bridles, canopy, lines and safety. Im barely in the water now but when I am my mindset has definately changed.

Ian, come on, admit it... you are under the thumb and got it more for the wife. I better not let my other half read this thread or Ill be joining you...

It's got to be a pain in the butt to ride with, but if if it buys peace of mind for his missus it's surely buying him more time on water too!

This seems like a rather key point in the use of a Shark shield.

""The surf product only can be guaranteed to work when it's stationary, not when it's surfing in the wave or paddling," Mr Hartley said.

The actual chance of being eaten by one of these bad boys is so low I wouldn't bother. And if the day comes when when one of them are chomping me in half then its just my time.

Couldn't agree more, in fact if your so worried about sharks buy a twin tip so you can go faster than snails pace, and maybe they won't catch you

^^ probably a safer bet! Frozen chicken on a 20m string, chances are the sharks would go for the chicken first and that would give you enough time to get the hell out of there.

Ignore all the knockers dude, great effort. Most people are black hat people hence the response. At least you've done something. If you improved it cosmetically, there may be a market for it, kayaks, sups, maybe?

Please tell me what that is?

being a pomp I have concerns about being in the water with our friends from the free lunch club. The most I get to worry about is a floater from a passing Lux yacht!

I do read the number of attacks on the WA coast. Where I have been in the water the most on my trips. Mainly up from Hillarys.

that thing looks like it discharges some sort of current?

its a box with some digits, possibly a flashing light and bit of long plastic, its made by the special effects crew from the bbc for doctor who, and makes the rider feel safe from hungry whites, its basically a modern version of a world war II lancaster bombers rear gunner

LOL. so is meant to put the shark off with some sort of sound?

it looks purpose made is there a link to these, just interested in reading more. WA has had a fair share of Shark action over the last few years. Even when i was last out there was a guy that got attacked on Cotterslow ( sp ) beach. Then it was a no Swim zone for a while, as a lot of sharks made there way up the coast.

They don't play nice do they!
