If you dont know how to relaunch your kite, you shouldnt be kiting in the surf and asking these stupid questions. Your QR is a LAST RESORT only to be used in a catestrophic faliure. In the scenario I talked about earlier the kite twisted and went to full power, pushing the bar out wont do a thing the only way is to release your kite.

Once a kite is released it loses all power.

If your kite crashes in big swell, and a wave is going to swamp it you dont want to be attached to your kite, this also would warrent a release.

You obviously dont kite in the surf.

I don't kite in the surf, so i don't really relate to your opinion.

I mainly go in **** chop or flat water. In these situations i would recommend wearing leash attached to your harness. If in trouble release the chicken loop. if still in trouble release the leash.....

I guess in surf...... decent surf...... you don't want to be attached to a downed kite by a safety leash, and it probably doesn't help any other surf users either. A downed kite in the surf would be dangerous either way. Why tie yourself to it?

Echo and waveslave would that be fair enough?

and while we're at it,
what is the accepted terms for
a) the chicken loop release
and
b)the safety/death leash release.

This is probably causing some confusion especially for newbs.

When i say "QR" what is everyone thinking?

Er...

QR - to me means chicken loop.

Safety release - to me means the extra last resort release on my (5th line) safety line.

Yes, that's correct. ^^^
What's the point of having a death leash (when connected to the chicken-loop)....
when it fails to tether the kite when the quick release is activated ?
If the end result is a runaway kite, why have a death leash in the first place ?
It makes no sense.

Works great when you drop the bar and need to climb back up to your lines and keep flying. In good surf when not riding unhooked I ride without a leash completely, Just more things to get tangled on.

....easy....Echostorm.....my comment was not about you, but about your advice. You may disengage from you kite only if there is no one downwind from you who you can potentially injure or even kill. Your advice was dangerous, and I wish that no one take it seriously...

FYI. I kite 90% of times in the surf at a beach that we share with other beach-goers and water users.

WAKSA requires all members to use a death-leash at their events.
WAKSA believes a 'safety' leash prevents runaway kites.
But sadly, we know from past fatalities that 'safety' leashes were never safe....
that's why the INDUSTRY has now added a quick release to make them slightly less dangerous...
A quick release that ironically turns a kite into a runaway kite.
WAKSA should be pro-choice and not make it mandatory to wear a death-leash at their events.

So Slave are you happy for people to show up at your local, along with the tourists, fishos and turbulence, and launch and land without a kite leash?

Death-leashes can break when landing a kite..... ^^^
Tourists and fishos don't like runaway kites.
A flag-line that you can physically grab onto is a safer and better option when flagging out the power.
