It really is about being calm and focused, which for me is a result of more than 30 years of daily meditation.

Hey Zen-Master,

If you insist on bragging publicly about your inner-calmness due to meditating for 30 years daily,

then don't be surprised when you lose your way along the road to self-enlightenment.

lol.

I could swim exactly the distance i would get till Hypothermia kills me.
and just before that I wouldn't be caring to much about how far I had swum.
Probably be thinking why I didn't swim the other direction to shore.

I have been smashed many times...and yes, my ego does get in the way sometimes. I was making a statement of a life long practice that helps ME. Perhaps it does nothing for anyone else. I have never claimed to be a master of anything...ever. I still try and be a better and kinder human being. Life is the education.

I think a lot of people over estimate their ability in the water especially as they get older. Bit off topic but many kiters don't have much surf sense and don't seem to be aware of the real risk of drowning. Wearing a life jacket or impact vest when in big surf or a long way out might save your life. Getting stuck in a big surf without a surfboard or flotation is scary. Personally I would like to see the combined harness / impact vests that aren't too bulky make a come back. Maybe they will when life jacket rules are enforced. All you cool invincible dudes laugh away.

I can't make the 2km, I've been taking stroke correction classes and have made an effort to improve my swimming skills by practicing in the ocean and pool weekly. I didn't grow up in the water, or around it, but I want to be a strong swimmer. I look at it like walking, almost a basic skill that if healthy I should be able to enjoy. Its been great learning.
