Where I live in Canada kiteboarding is only allowed on the one of the off leash dog beaches in the summer time.

I've had 2 different kites run over by dogs as well as had them peed on a few times.

This is a real problem with 1 or 0 strut kites as they lie low enough to the ground that dogs just treat them like a picnic blanket and run right over them. Because of the soft sand the paws rip right through the ripstop putting 5x5 cm holes for each step.

Both times this has happened I got no compensation from the dog owners. People are generally clueless about their dogs. Even at the kite beach I'll have to say something to fellow kiters that let their dogs run free.

I think the problem is that they are used to 3-5 strut kites that dogs will walk around.

I normally let it go when dogs jump on my sails. Last year at a popular windsurf/kite spot, a had carried out a brand new sail (hadn't even touched water) to return to my car to get a GPS watch. I returned to find a small dog using my sail as a trampoline. Owners didn't seem to care. I offered to do the same thing to their car and see if they would like it back. They then saw my point of view.

But who enforces it? Can't see the police coming down to the beach to get a guy with a dog. They're too busy. I can understand why you'd want to lock the dog in a car, or get out your screwdriver. So I can do what I want. I've got dogs. And you better not touch them.

Im a dog owner with 2 dogs that live to eat kites. Fortunately i have forgiving friends, as The 2 times there have been incidents I offered to replace the kites, to me, this is the only acceptable outcome.

Council rangers can enforce it. Dog owners are liable for any damages they cause. There are also rules about dogs still being in control on off leash beaches. Some poor owner copped a fine recently in Melb ares because her dog licked a child. Pretty sure a Ranger would back you up when you explain the worth of a kite

I think its the same answer as to most questions in this regard..

- if ur going to an area that u know has dogs there even in 20 knots deal with it and don't leave the kite on the sand as u have to

- empty internet threats don't do anything for anyone

common sense is the key and more kiting time on the water equals less hassle and no screwdrivers to be dealt with

Not a good analogy as the car is in a car park that is meant to be parked in not on a dog beach. Common (which is an oxymoron) sense tells us that it is not a good idea to leave your kite pumped up on a dog beach. Whinge away but it is a first world problem.

I kite on beaches with dogs all over the place. They do not bite or run all over my kites . 16 years of this. Worst case, dog pees on my bag.

Ha ha. People get pissed at dogs all the time. They don't get it. Dogs are man's best friend but the kind of friend that is unpredictable and sometimes a bit aggressive. I'm not responsible for my crazy friend's behavior. Whatever my dogs do I just say, 'wow, sorry, never saw that coming he doesn't usually do that!', which is true! But they're completely innocent too so you lay a finger on a dog and you just watch what happens!

Reading your last comment though I believe you emplied that you are not responsible for your (crazy friends) actions ie your dog.

Now you're either trolling for the banter or completely irresponsible, because as a dog owner you must be responsible for its behaviour and actions in order to mitigate any harm coming to it or anyone else.

And surely repeating yourself saying things like "you touch my dog and see what happens" is a bit silly and inflamitary as I can't believe anyone will just start throwing down or stabbing dogs on the beach anyway it's all a bit far fetched aye.

Anyway live and let live enjoy the wind and look out for your mates on the water and your dogs

The sydney people used to come down on sundays and set up at 9am waiting for the seabreeze.

Bigwallyzues, a 90kg English mastif used to pee on every kite on the beach on his morning walk.
The sydney people would arm flail and scream "whose dog is this.? "
To which I'd reply
"Bigwallyzues is his own dog, tale it up with him"
Sydney people never took it up with wallyzues and for a few seasons, he continued his Sunday morning ritual of peeing on sydney people's kites.

dog owner's feeling the need to set up their campchair in the middle of the usual kite launchzone and keep their dog unleashed next to them and giving you evil looks for "upsetting the dog" with your kite you are trying to land or get landed.
