I have done the experiment several times and I can absolutely assure you that a good light weight medium aspect foil kite (Pulsion 12 in my case) will stay up in the air during super low lulls better than a Cloud 13.4 or 13.5. My Clouds are 10.4 and smaller for that reason.

Agree re the smaller Clouds over the bigger sizes. I've had a Cloud C5 in a smaller size and it was a lovely little kite to foil with in stronger winds. I was watching a Cloud D 13.4m the other day. It looked quite slow and almost clumsy looking in turns - no more nimble than the high A/R foil kites that were also out. It almost looked on the edge of buckling when down looping but to be fair it was probably over - powered at the time as I was comfortably powered on a 9m. If I ever bought another Cloud it would be in the smaller sizes again for sure. I think an 8 would be the max I'd get. Quite nice kites to foil with for sure. Lots of grunt and fun to fly.

I have 10.4D and kited the 13.4 D. Correctly inflated and trimmed I found the 13.4 D stayed up longer than the 10.4D.
Both amazing regardless - absoulty nothing clumsy about any D version Cloud kite.

No I'm sure that's the case. Just as an observer I was surprised by the slow turning speed - but I guess it's a 13.4m kite so it's not going to be the most nimble kite on the water in any case.

Forgot to mention on 32m race lines. Race lines minimise bow in lines due to lower resistance and as such kite is more responsive.
I've only just started using race lines and can not believe the difference.

Are you using the ozone race lines with 100kg for back and 200 kg for front?

I have 100 x 200kg on 32m lines and 200x 300kg on 27m Ozone lines.

So far 10.4D Cloud strutless.
In 8 to 10kn breeze.
I think I'll just use 200x 100 for light wind and 200x300 27m above 12kn ish.
A friend who is 100kg plus uses 200x 300kg 27 to 32m long in all conditions on Cloud strutless kites 3.7 to 13.4m

Ozone has discontinued the 100kg/200kg race lines. All their race lines are now 200kg rears and 300kg fronts sold in sets of matched length 4 line sets 12,13,15,16,17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 50M lengths.
These lines are not much larger in diameter than the previous version in 100/200 as they are made with the newer, higher modulus dyneema line that Ozone switched too several months ago.
They make a big difference for light wind kiting, but they need to be examined regularly for wear, especially the rears and I'd definitely not recommend to ride with twists in the lines ( they won't break, but riding with twists will accelerate wearing).

Only new to foiling, up and going and now Looking at the Cabrinha Apollo in a 9 or 10m as a dedicated foiling kite, does anyone have any real life experience with these? The only comments I have found here are based on larger sizes.

If you're a Cabrinha rider, get a Drifter over an Apollo. Wave kites, single or no strut and foil kites are what foilers find best on a HF. You can certainly use any kite you want including the Apollo, but 5 struts is overkill and will impact your low end foiling potential. A fast, nimble wave kite is so much nicer to use for free-riding. There's a good series of vids by Mac-kiteboarding called "Foil Fridays". There is an episode that talks about the most suitable kites for HF. Check it out.

Thanks for the reply. I currently use Switchblades but was led to believe the Apollo was designed by Cabrinha as an alternative to foil kites to be used for HF.

Go Drifters. You need the drifting ability when down looping during turns on the HF. They also open up wave riding and have great resale value. In-demand kite. I'm 90kg and use my 5m 2018 Drifter at 18kts on the foil - stamdard Perth seabreeze. My 7m is for about 15kts.

For what it's worth, went out for a sesh last week with a guy on an 18 meter flysurfer sonic 2. I was on the 12 mono. And large foil.

What I can say is it was easier for me to get out of the water on power stroke than him. His kite seemed to do the slowest power stroke known to mankind.

The foil has a massive part to play when it comes to how low can u go. My foil has a minimum speed for me of about 11kts, but if I'm on the race foil, more like 13kts.

In the light winds, if you can get to takeoff speed, your sorted.

How heavy are you?

I weight 65kg and starting transitions on a high volume foil board.

I am searching for the most apropriate low end kite for me in less than 10 knots breezes.

Maybe my 11m 3 strut kite on 29m lines is not enough but haven?t tried it yet on such light winds. Learned on 15 knots with a 9m getting overpowered sometimes.

I read most average or heavy kiters advise de 12m mono but I am afraid I get overpowered once up on the foil.

Is the 9m mono with long lines enough to stay up and relaunch on ultra light winds? Also can I waterstart looping considering Im a light kiter?

Also have a 12m and 14m rpm but I dont think they will stay up and relauch on such conditions.

I think once you start to get under 10 knots, you want a light weight single strut or no strut kite (lei or foil).

In 8 knots (@100kg), I can get away with a 13m no strut kite and 32m lines (and flat wide planning board to at least get onto top of the water).

I have an 18m Chrono, 17m strutless, but I just have no need for that size when I am freeride foiling. Great for launching, but they generate too much power once I get going.

For your weight, a light weight single strut/strutless 10m or 11m with long race lines will get you going in 8 knots.
