80's ski jumping (ouch, ouch, fn ouch)
Those crashes are sickening but what's more amazing is just how far those guys fly. Have they dumbed down the ski jumping (safety issues) since then?
The "V Style" became popular just after the above video. They jump a lot further now.
246m (that's 1/4 of a kilometre!)
I'm just pasting stuff from here:
www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/1y9rzs/i_always_thought_that_ski_jumping_and_ski_flying/ That is just insane but at these Olympics the polish winner on the big hill "only" jumped a max 140metres. Is it measured from the take off point at the olympics but the world record is a measurement of both ramp and distance? Will have to google!
EDIT - Olympics only have the normal and Large hill comps.
Today, FIS Ski Jumping World Cup are held on three types of hills:
Normal hill competitions for which the calculation line is found at approximately 80?100 metres (260?330 ft). Distances of up to and over 110 metres (360 ft) can be reached.
Large hill competitions for which the calculation line is found at approximately 120?130 metres (390?430 ft). Distances of over 145 metres (476 ft) can be obtained on the larger hills. Both individual and team competitions are run on these hills.
Ski-flying competitions for which the calculation line is found at 185 metres (607 ft). The Ski Flying World Record of 246.5 metres (809 ft) is held by Johan Remen Evensen, and was set in Vikersundbakken, Norway in February 2011.
