Was over at beautiful Peel Island yesterday having a few beers and lunch with some mates when we got talking about our first cars. It turned out a quite an amusing topic, so my question for yall today is what was your first car? How did it go, was it a sh!tbox or a score?

Mine was a 1985 Toyota Hilux 4x4 which i bought off a bloke who had used it as his farm rig for the 2 years he owned it, due to a back issue he could no longer drive it. It proved to be a fairly reliable truck but was slow as balls. I remember trying to get up a steep hill that was close to my cousins house. I was towing my uncles 14ft tinny and only just made it up the hill even in 1st gear.

Morris 1500 (well it was my sisters but i used it) hell I towed 14 foot cruise craft with a 60Hp, just needed mates to sit on the front guards on the boat ramp.

Cortina station wagon. Never had an issue, though it was neither cool nor fast. Carried stuff to the beach easier than my pushie.

1959 Volkswagen beetle. The first year to have the larger rear window.

I got practised enough to drop the engine out of it in 15 minutes so that I could replace the burnt out valve driver side front that would burn near every trip I did between Brisbane and Sydney.

The book said it's top speed was 69 mph but in the cold air between Cunningham's Gap and Warwick I had it cruising at 85 mph with plenty of pedal left.

Nah, the reason we got rid of them was that they were crap and expensive to repair.

I keep on admiring some of these older cars and thinking it would be cool to have one again, but then I remember how bad they were compared to newer cars and get over the nostalgia.

I used to have a ford escort 2L and it was great to drive and fast up until about 100kays, but I replaced it with a VN wagon that was a few years old at the time and the VN was by far quieter and more comfortable.

Looking at some of the prices people are trying to sell hunks of junk at the moment, I guess someone will buy them, but there is a lot of work in restoring something so bad.

I had a white Holden HQ ute - great windsurfing/camping vehicle & the build plate revealed it was an 08/1972 model - just like me lol.

1941 ishStudebaker Commander ,same as below but colours reversed and no spats. Cost 52 quid , drove it to Phillip Island and Winkypop/Bells regulary until one day coming back from Phillip Island heard a knocking noise , brother suggested I go faster to see if noise went ,I did, blew up engine.
Starter button was under clutch so had to depress clutch to start . Could have a dance inside so big.

Red 1969 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV. Second and third cars were red Alfa 2000 Berlinas. The GTV needed rings and pistons after 18 months, traded in for the Berlina, wrote that off, got another one, wrote that off too.

I'm a little smarter (and slower) now......

HQ station wagon , three on the tree . It was a physical workout driving it . Three point turns , both hands on one side of the wheel a pull down hard , easy , do that sixteen times and you've done a three point turn . Mum helped me make paisley curtains. The things Ive done in that car make it the best car ever .

My first car was a f.j holden.it was a great car.

Got it as a no goer and did it up in our workshop when I was 16, got my licence on my 17th birthday and was off and running. It was a rocket at the time, 12:1 compression but after a year and a couple of gearboxes the old man got me to trade it in on a new corolla.

Just as well as not long after I was hit head on by a drunk on a bend, it would have been all over in the Imp.

did you also know it's expensive g an Imp trying to race a Cortina. It also spectacular witchng the remains of your Imp engine spread out on the road behind you.

French sowing machine called a Simca. After clean up of fuel system got to 92mph (tail wind!!).. We had back route thru the bush back from pub.. Took on a mates Wolsey... Reversing out of deadend bush zone stuck on bank. We jumped out lifted arse end around and the floor pan split from the body .. We came 2nd
Good thing MOT (UK roadworthy existed) it was repaired but retired with blown bigend shell bearings shortly after..

Bloody hell, are we showing our age or what. I feel ashamed saying mine was a 77 Celica, modern compared to you lot. Actually pretty cool that we are still actively participating in water activities we love rather than being lounge lizards.

HQ station wagon 1973, that orangey brown colour with a white roof, three on the tree, wind down back window for taking the long loads, saved for it by mowing lawns, bargained the fella down from $1000 to $830.
After a while, had to start it by tapping the starter motor with the steering lock, that was just part of the starting procedure for the next few years. Rust was a problem with it, particularly in the tailgate, and rear wheel arches.

By the sounds of it you guys are a lot older than me. I Its amazing how the old cars have become so expensive and collectable. Restored HQ Wagons are like $35,000. FJ holdens are $28,000+, and there arent any morris 1500s on gumtree but a morris minor is $10,000.
