It gets even more ironic with the new labor state government here in WA now not sure what to do after carping at any attempts by the then Barnett govt to try and tackle the problem.

Over to you Mcgowan.... cant wait

i think that the great whites might be more prevalent sue to greater numbers of whales etc.
watersports/ surfing etc all grew in a time when there were low whale numbers. now they are back to normal and we have lots of sharks. If we expect to be able to continue the way we have we are going to have to cull the gws in WA and SA. I daresay there will be a decline in tourism and watersports if we do nothing. I live in a non GWS are and spend heaps of time in the water. I do a lot of speqarfishing and am not overly afraid of sharks. But i;; be fxcked if i get in the water anywhere there could be a great white, even just swimming. Ditto with large crocs near high pop areas on the east coast.

I sit on the fence on this one. I'm not pro killing or against it.

If the increase in GW's is a global issue, is killing a few along the WA/NSW coastline going to have any impact in the bigger picture?

The new WA Governments policy and procedures on shark mitigation is ...Zero.

Quite happy for a cull on those listed... what's your point?

Point is there is not enough done on the garbage on the mainland. The ratio of shark attacks to other crap is much lower. I guess they go for easy options hey!

Its coming , that's for sure . Question is how many more will be taken before action starts.
Personally I don't think a cull is the answer, I believe commercial fishing sorted things before , bring it back.

There was a hippy dude on abc 24 expressing his views on tv over the past week wish I could find the link. He suggested it should be called fishing and expressed that younger GWS are actually eatable and can be used for many health benefits. My thoughts cull the over 3 meter sharks and give water users a 10 year break.thats how it's been in the past 20 year cycle!

Bloody do gooder Greenies. Just don't go in the water, you know they live there, thats the sharks home.
Bloody inner city greenies who's only exercise is the 200m ride on their fixie down to their local trendy coffee shop for their deconstructed soy latte, sitting their making FB page after FB page to protest the next trendy thing to be offended by.
The only surf they will ever see is from the bar at the Kelly Slater wave pool while the sip their locally made boutique IPA.

Id like to see what happened if a brown snake wondered into one of these greenies backyard and bit their 17 year old daughter and she died. In theory your backyard is just the snakes land also, so don't go in their land and don't ever leave your house.

Cull them under the "commercial fishing" mumbo jumbo, I'm sure we could easily sell them to China or Japan.
Great White shark fin soup anyone?

People make a great point about the tourism. At this point I would not travel to WA or SA and surf, so so highly unlikely I know, but Im just not doing it. Humans have evolved superior intelligence to be able to protect themselves and therefore we are top of the food chain, hell no do we want people been eaten by less superior animals.
To me these hippies are valuing sharks lives above humans.

If i kill someone I go to jail for life, I may swell be dead, id probably prefer to be dead than in jail forever.
Maybe we can build big pools and put the sharks who kill people in those, make them swim around and think about what they have done.

Sharks are not the killing machine that Hollywood makes us to believe. There are over 500 known species of shark and among those only 3 are known to be dangerous - the bull shark, tiger shark, and the great white shark. Humans are not their natural prey they only attack humans when they feel that their habitat is being threatened.

From below i imagine this would look alot like a seal colony....

Shame Mcgowan has finally broken his silence on this issue to announce his policy = do nothing. Its a personal responsibility thing apparently.

OK fine time to tale personal responsibility. Deterrents shown to be ineffective against great whites in attack mode so they are out.

Whos for a fish then? We could become the home of the worlds first vigilante fishers.

You have any info to what study found the deterrents ineffective to a great white in attack mode?

I personally think this this whole thing is getting blown out of proportion. Since 2000 there is less than 1 fatality a year in WA. I don't see this apparent incredible danger.

No they don't attack because they feel threatened that is false information!
They attack anything that splashes around in the water that's how they hunt.
They do attack humans and eat them. It's also false information to say they don't like to eat humans!
They are somewhat preastoric like crocodiles and dinosaurs small brains trapped in large body's!

i cant recall the link but it was for the sharkshield version (supposedly the best option) and reviewed several studies in south africa and south australia by UWA. I think it was referenced in an earlier thread on sharks here if you search it. The south australia study was labelled "inconclusive" but the scary thing for me was in 30% of cases it appeared turning the thing on actually provoked an attack in some large (4m plus) females!

No i dont think its an overdone risk if you are a regular surfer in either the south west or south coast. Think about it - maybe we are talking a regular population of "risk takers" of say 20,000 people (being pretty generous here to include people coming down from Perth) with an average of 2 fatalities per year more recently thats a 1 in 10,000 chance you will eventually die from shark attack in WA. Far higher than the risk from car crash where we spend 100s of millions trying to make people safe so $200,000 on unproven deterrents is a real cop out by McGowan IMHO

peter clarkson was devoured by two GWS in full view of his decky. He was an advocate of the sharkshield with testamonials on the ss website and was wearing it at the time of his death.
