So, my onboard computer tells me my current and average fuel consumption. I typically hypermile cause I'm in no hurry and am saving for my retirement. A common figure is 8.2-8.4 L/100km, but after my latest fill up at a Coles express ( usually go caltex or puma) I am struggling to achieve 9L/100km. Fill up time was very early morning, same as usual, so what is the cause of the disparity? Dodgy additives?

Cooler mornings (more dense air) and lower humidity (less water in the air has same effect = more oxygen for given volume)
So warm humid days and rain last 3 weeks ish could have meant car was using a bit less fuel.
Although I would think it is really more a winter vs summer thing,not the vagaries of small changes lately

I reckon you should fill up Coles one time them Puma at the next and record it over a long period that could be very interesting

Or a sensor is getting old, it will change over time anyway. To be approaching accurate you would have to replace at least O2 sensor, service, and then repeat experiment

I'm talking fill to fill rather than historic, so I think we can discount sensor accuracy. Weather is the only other variable but to be fair the tank is only at 3/4 now, so I may be jumping the gun on this subject.
Not totally off topic but the second family car is a 1.5lt. Honda. While not super in an Aussie car crash, it has impressively low fuel consumption when driven as engineered.

I'm wondering if Petes topic was a bit of scaremongering too.....? Is it yet to really go up?
Today we have $1.65 here which a little bit up on normal Sunday but not as horrific as the topic title suggests..... $1.70 in Perth would be $1.75 plus here....

I reckon the low margins the retailers talk about are bullsh!tfarken though.
3 yrs ago when it was around $1.30 to $1.40 ish here - one little independent servo dropped it to $1 for a month. They managed.
Shame no price war resulted!

its interesting to note that Perth's fuel prices are cheaper than Sydney.

One thing you guys have going for you is that your servos have to nominate their prices for the next day, so they are locked in and consumers can choose easily.

Here in NSW there is a similar website to check the prices, but it just shows the current prices.

What I have seen just on Wednesday night was one servo selling for $1.47 a litre, and then other servos selling at $1.67 a litre. 20c a litre is a big difference, so how does that happen?

Just look at the size of the vehicles we get around in! The price of petrol is not a problem in Australia. Handy to have a voluminous van for windsurfing, but if petrol prices doubled we'd get by.

I filled my Territory from near empty at $153.9 yesterday in Sydney. $101. 57, fark!!!!!!!!!!
It did have all my windsurf gear inside

I worked with a guy that bought a petrol station, and from what he said its sometimes more complex than that. He was saying that the big companies want you to buy fuel from their distributors, yet you could get it cheaper from other non-brand distributors. So, it sounds like the large distributors are taking a bigger cut than the smaller ones.

From what he described, it didn't sound like there was much margin in it, but more like small margins at times, compensated by larger margins at other times.

It is interesting when you see huge differences in prices like that though. How can you get a 20c per litre difference only streets away?

I think WA got it right. If you have to set the price each day and make it available on the internet, people can shop around and choose to go to the cheaper places.

as long as motion lotion is available - the average punter will just keep paying whatever it takes to fill the tank, they will whinge and moan - but keep on paying through the nose.

however, when the servo pumps are drying up - I think it might be a different story!
