The other problem is that in a scenario where you are going to get raped or mugged or whatever you won't have time to pull your phone out, unlock it, open the app and press the panic button. If you do then all you are doing is maybe gathering evidence. No emergency service can respond quick enough to stop what's happening. .

I think it's a good idea Macro but Chris is right, no time to fiddle with your phone. What it needs is a bracelet/ring/necklace with a big button that takes a hard press to activate. It's bluetooth paired to the phone. The jewellery also has a couple of low energy leds, green for ready and red for activated.

User can even show mugger/raper, see this red light? Police have been called with my location...

Right, I think even mugger will be reasonable when presented with recording device and will not be so stupid to proceed and continue threat when in full view to the police.

That is still better then gun . Lets imagine lady carrying a gun in the bag for self protection. If she is much safer ? If she is prepared really to shoot and kill mugger / or just stranger on the spot ? Even brave guy, with fast reflexes and trigger happy.
Do you want to spend rest of your life knowing that you killed somebody and shadow of the criminal suits hanging over forever.
It is much better to leave sometimes justice to public forces .

Much easier is to point your camera : " Do you know what this means ? Everything is recorded. Have a nice day"

There is always question How far we are going to go, when chasing threats and offences ?

Are we happy to send video of driving maniac speeding and slaloming on the motorway?

Maybe at the moment that is only stupid prank driver, but in few minutes somebody else , completely innocent could be killed.

We could now call police but we could also attach 'video evidence'

Maybe police don't need to act on every single light evidence- but if pattern emerge that this individual " collected" many similar video complains over time - will be asked hard question one day or insurance premium raised.

Maybe things like that will belong to the past and will not happen anymore ?

A woman told me she tried to take a speeding fine off her daughter and the police just said they've checked and her phone was not in the same area as the camera at the time of the offence.
You be a dumb crim if you carry ya phone around now days.

That would never stand up. I even doubt the police would bother checking the call records without a warrant to justify it.

You would have to prove that the woman had her phone with her, which is surely almost impossible.

I'll call that little story as bull**** too. Where her phone is has absolutely no relevance to proving who was driving and if they had bothered to go that far to gather that evidence then they had enough to charge the mum with something.

something like Youtube.

So if there is something already like it, why would anyone spend money making another

At extreme video evidence system - or we could call this Virtual Witness - could document any wrong doing by one person

We already have the capability to do this. There are historical footage archives at most television studios and universities. You have not provided justification for the aggregation of such data with no regard for quality control, and with no clear aim on what this aggregation is actually achieving that cannot be done now.

sometimes I think the land of the free has it right.

no-one ever raped a .45,
and identifying a mugger or thug is lots easier when they are in the back of the ambo.

Happy land and possibly the only one in whole world where rape is not existent because everybody could have a gun.

Should our 14 y.o girl from article above carry also machine gun in her school bag and bunch of grenades ( there where at least 6 offenders at play)?

^ How do the police know her daughter's phone number?

A few months ago I went hiking with a friend and left my car at the edge of the rainforest near the Daintree River. When I returned to an area with mobile coverage I got a message from my son. The police had looked his number up and called him after a member of the public saw my car parked and thought the owner might be lost. So, the police have reasonable access to phone numbers if they want them.

Note: in this particular case the police didn't think to contact National Parks (who we had given a full travel advice to). But that's another story.
