Will the tradition of celebrating the start of the new year with fireworks happen for 2020?

How much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses are released on what is essentially a frivolous show. If, as we are told, have ten years to save the planet sacrifices need to be made. Perhaps banning fireworks could be a start. Would it not be better to ban something like fireworks than banning something like burning diesel to power a farm tractor?

Also if there is a total fire ban, is it illegal to light a firework? Or would the fireworks, for example around Sydney Harbour, get an exemption from the fire ban?

In one perspective it is like a diesel tractor, but instead farming tourism coin.

I reckon if Sydney's outskirts are still burning and the place is full of smoke it's going to be a really bad look. Really bad.

Dunno about anywhere east of Eucla, but here in W.A.,professional fireworks displays have automatic exemption from fire bans and no permits required - unless over ridden by local authorities when conditions look dodgy

There's always something bad happening to someone somewhere. You either ban them all the time, or accept it and concede that life goes on.

Agree 100%. What has NYE fireworks got to do with bushfires?
May as well ban lighting the stove for a cuppa as well.

I think fireworks have had their day. They've become boring, as well as environmentally and economically dubious.

I'd like to see alternative visual spectacles developed. I'm thinking dirigibles and tethered blimps blasting projected images and lasers all over the place. That would be cool and you could sell the concepts and the technology.

We only have ten years left.

We must stop releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

What better place to start than with what is a frivolous exercise? Once fireworks are banned we can look to banning non essential travel by vehicles powered by fossil fuels except for those who really need it. We can then ban air conditioning except for those who really need it. Slowly but surely we can avert disaster by bans, regulations and taxes except on those who are exempt. It can be done. Many will suffer, suffering is part of survival. Some will suffer more than others.

This is an emergency.

I wouldn't think a proper firework display would kill that many dolphins or raise sea levels. Playing jousting on our BMX with ten shooters is probably a bad idea , ( I miss those days ) , we did play it safe though because we had rubbish bin lid protection I think there banned everywhere now for home use arnt they ?
Its ok for us grumpy old farts to say they are boring because we have seen so many displays . Im old and grumpy and they are still friggin awesome !!!
A light show would also be good , but nowhere near as fantastic. Yes they are old fashioned but that's OK.
Of all the many , many firework displays I've been to I've never seen a bored looking face. I would doubt a firework display would sadden anyone , including a family with a burned house , if anything it would give them something else to think about if only for a few minutes.

Farts you say! This topic has as much substance as farts in a bottle but then again talking about farts in a bottle. There are about 9 billion people and 2. billion livestock all who fart around 20 times a day for about a minimum of one litre of gas per day not including belching. OMG that's a lot of greenhouse gas.

Maybe get a few collections tins and use fireworks event as a way to get donations for the fireries. Everyone's a winner then.
Fire works, bright lights, colours and sound, but when your close enough to feel the concussion it's even better.

I'd focus on banning crypto currencies first. The amount of power being pointlessly wasted there should be a criminal offence.

Imagine if we all stopped using computers and mobiles to post on seabreeze. I think the greenhouse cost to produce the computers/phones/power to run them, so we can whine on forums about global warming etc., would be 1 000 000 times more than some fire works once a year.

I don't want to ban fireworks. I want something better. A better show. Better environmentally. Better technologically. Better economically.

That's what Australia has always prided itself on. Other countries dick around and mess stuff up. Australians come along and quietly get on with fixing things.

In more recent times we've become the do nothing country. We can't do anything because it's too hard or too expensive or it's never been done before. We have to leave stuff up to other countries because they're better at stuff than us.

The only true solution is banning people having kids. Unless we are happy to return to a genuine primitive lifestyle, nothing is sustainable. As long as our society is digging stuff out of the ground, whether it's coal of lithium, it's gonna end someday.

Much more pollution comes from cars, ban the cars, we are standing against climate change but changing fireworks won't make a difference. Others will not follow our lead but laugh and take the market share. Like India in the paris agreement has agreed to increase emissions., this allows them to drive their industry and economy and now they need more coal to do this, hence Ardani. And somehow Australia is recorded for the emissions as the coal was mined here? The bottom line is India burns coal but its Australia's fault

At the last cop 25 the UN traveling circus was pushing this ideology hard .Pointing the finger at the west saying white people should not have children because the west uses more resources per capita than developing world s#!t holes.

Could save a lot of CO2 emissions if we decentralised the fireworks. 1.5 million people transport themselves from the outskirts of greater Sydney. Even if they only average 1 litre of fuel each and each litre produces 2.3 kg of CO2 that's 3.5 million kg of CO2 just getting people to the event. 3.5 thousand extra tonnes of the stuff up in the atmosphere. to watch 8 tonnes of fireworks.

Fireworks cause the chooks to stop laying, I presume it has the same effect on general birdlife. Can we correlate the fireworks tonnage with the declining population of urban birdlife?

Hmm, got me thinking now, just how good a performing setup could one produce using only natural renewable materials? Could you make a half-decent planing short board?

I've been looking at how the Amish live. Amish generally don't use modern technology or even twentieth century technology. So they don't drive cars and get around with animal drawn carts. If they use electricity it's generated by solar panels and stored in batteries as they won't connect their homes to the electricity grid. They generally farm and run small businesses and usually do well. They are community oriented and look after each other.

Perhaps those looking for an alternative to our consumptive polluting society could look towards living like this. It's hard work for sure but generally they seem pretty happy.
