My family has always been private about our time spent together. It was our way of keeping one thing that was ours, with a man we shared with an entire world. But now that?s gone, and I feel stripped bare. Depression is not a rich persons disease, it doesn't discriminate on the grounds of how large is your bank account is.

Many everyday Australians suffer depression and self medicate on alcohol or pills, many take there own lives, they quite often have kids, does that make them ' a **** human being."

I think this is a little harsh. You paint it as if the guy had everything and threw it all away. I think it is not all 'the gift of all the money and free time'. From the sounds of it, he was struggling after 2 divorces to keep things afloat, at a time when his career was in its wind-down phase.

It would be very difficult living in a world where you never really know if you have true friends and think sometimes everyone just wants your money. I think if you threw this 'gift' at most people they would struggle with it. Once you get past the fun of having enough money to be comfortable, I am sure you become uncomfortable and start worrying about other people and their motives.

It has been suggested that with this sort of personality, to have such a funny high side, that there must also be a sad low side. I do agree that if he was just a regular joe, he would have been fine. But he wasn't. He was a successful comedian, that made it, and then suffered depression.

Sometimes I think life as a 'nearly poor' person would be ideal. Not enough money where you wife gains anything by leaving you, no one thinks they can bludge off of you, but enough to live. Unfortunately, the intelligent people in this scenario would probably try to earn more money and trap themselves into consuming more and more.


As for people looking to suicide, I really don't think people want to have everyone think of them as suffering. I think they just want out of the suffering. To these people, making it appear cowardly is not going to change their decision.

Johnny, you seem to seek out or make up what you want to answer. I can't work out in your reply where you are disagreeing with me and where (whether) you are agreeing with me.

I am guessing that you mean psychology and not physiology.

Do you turn your back on a drug addict because they are addicted? I think initially they have a choice, then after a point, they don't. I think drugs are an easy out for a lot of people, and they don't realise that they are probably making it harder for themselves.

I will miss Robin Williams.

I can remember when Mork and Mindy first came out and the effect that his humour had on me. Since then, I had followed his life he has been in numerous aspects of theatre and stage. A career of 40 years in theatre is no mean feat.

He was truly a comic genius. Over the past couple of days, my opinion of this has been renewed in listening and watching some of his past shows; and listening to the outporings of respect in the media.

He had problems. Perhaps his problems were a legacy of his genius or an inspiration to it. But I doubt if he was any different to other high achievers. We all have faults, but maybe in the high achievers these faults are magnified by exposure or personality.

I will miss his creativity.

I agree with nearly everything you have written. But sadly people with depression don't think like you and me. The in ability to comprehend that, is their cancer.

I have lost a mate to suicide and i have had to live with the WHY for the last 26 years, but i can tell you i still morned him the same as all my other friends I've lost over those years.. The last thing i would want is his LIFE to be remembered/judged for his last moments on this earth..

My point is that some on here seem to say Depression is not an illness, its not like cancer. Well its just the same and we should strive to find a serous cure for both and have respect for victims of both horrible illnesses and support their families left behind, not reticule them for some easy laughs..

An good start would be show compassion, its what is missing in this world today..

But what a cold world it'll be if no one could relate to the pain Robin and others go through!
When he also cut his wrist to, that I could feel the desperate state he was in.
suffocation was cause of death, which is my choice too.

A very valid point indeed. When planning my end I try to think of how can I make it easy on those who find my body.
Not having any family any more and living by myself will not cause so much heart ache, even though my little bird would miss me :(

One can't stop the dark thoughts some times and I must be on guard as only a few weeks ago the black dog had hold of me!
WHY? Gee I don't really know, I was on holiday camped in a lovely place. There was $5000 in the draw ! But I couldn't fix my jeep, so
that was bothering me but for fuc's sake I could of paid someone. So WHY?

Im living in a great country town now with a small business and support from the Gov.
There are friends around me here, but I do miss my kids but it's been 10 years now and I really don't dwell on the lost.
My health is good now and iv fixed my jeep, brought a great van for my business and only yesterday I was standing in the yard looking around.
And I'm glad Im still here and appreciating how lucky I am.

I think a big reason to live is caring for others and knowing you are worth something too.
No doubt Robin was special and the real reasons for his choice are beyond us.
