I suppose something has to happen when you get beaten by 186 points. But with all the controversy about who will coach, whether the CEO is fired/reinstated/fired again and all the other crap that's flying about one thing just absolutely floored me. Bailey(the x coach) admitted that a couple of years ago he played certain players out of position. The questioner asked ,"for what reason " and Bailey responded "for the good of the Melbourne Football Club". When pressed further he admitted that the club needed the draft picks and the only way to get them was to finish the season in a lowly position and''I had no hesitation at all in the first two years of ensuring this club was well placed for draft picks,'' Bailey said.

''I have no hesitation in what we've done. I think what we've done is the right thing by the club and if it cost me my job, so be it. But the club is always bigger than the individual.
''I was asked to do the best thing by the Melbourne Football Club and I did it … I put players in different positions to enable them [to develop] … I think the whole football club agreed we wanted to develop our players, so we did".

**** me! this is the sort of thing that happens in the Indian cricket leagues. If this is the way it seems it casts doubt on All the results of the Melbourne Football Club.
Isn't this match fixing???

Denis Pagan got the sack after Tanking Carlton to get Kruzer, Gibbs and Murphy

Collingwood Tanked for a single year and got Dale Thomas and Pendlebury..

St Kilda would be Premiers this year if not for those two.. Of course St Kilda had low picks but they genuinely deserved them..

I think it all stinks.. Scully should be sent to GWS for nothing as punishment..

And the top 6 picks in the draft should be a random lottery amongst the bottom 6 teams..

Yes it is and did the book makers know about this ? What will the AFL do about this little problem ?

This type of 'match fixing' has been going on for years, the AFL has knowledge of all these issues and may be the initiator of such problems through the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of their rules, as they are a completely autonomous body, answerable to no one, who controls all levels of the game and even what is said against or about football.
The suggestion that the MFC should be dragged , to me is like shooting the messenger, the problems are endemic, Eddie has said the Collingwood FC is an $85 million enterprise, the whole ground advertising is sponsored by betting with the latest odds blurted out in at every paid interval, its happened with Formula 1 and FIFA as they grow so large and powerful so does the ability to corrupt and be corrupted.
Its all about money with sport second, after following Melb for a number of decades it is a very sad situation to see an implosion, alot of passion has been spent, same as any club but still a very sad time, but heh it is.. only football.

It's up to the top kids to go out and party, and turn up late to under 18's training, thus throwing their draft prospects.. That would throw a spanner in clubs tanking..

But who needs high draft picks, number 8 is the new number 1..

Heppel was tipped to go to Brisbane Lions, but a rumor started about a chronic injury and he fell to Essendon, the club he supported as a kid, in his home state.. It was a win win for both parties.. Is it beyond Essendon to start this rumor? Probably not..

Better than throwing games but..

Apparently Kreuzer turned down the big bucks from GWS to stay at Carlton (who tanked to get him)... So there is still some loyalty around..

The thing is though, that Dimitriou has maintained for years that the idea of "tanking would be so abhorant to players, coaches and the whole of any club that it could never happen. Personally, I tended to agree. I thought that the competetive nature of it all would make "tanking" obvious. I still want to believe that. But OK, say it is true, and Bailey actually does mean that he played players in the wrong positions to loose and therefore to gain advantage for his club through draft picks. Well that means he's fixing the result. And sure no money has changed hands but does that matter? he's still nobbled the game, He's still corrupted the basis of the sport. And if he has misused his players to loose, and I say IF, then ALL officials of the MFC should have a lifetime ban imposed and the club should be de registered.

Not a snowball chance in hell, while those two losers with names starting with A's and that fool organising the umpiring are running the show will there be any change, unless its an agreement between the "big four" clubs in Melbourne.
As ol Kero from the Age stated last year regarding the fixtures, "the big four get the preferential games and the rest is all "FIXED"
Log man you can yell and complain all you want, they wont change, your powerless to do anything
According to stats, the numbers are well up on last year across the board membership and via media "viewers", so in the big A's eyes, he can do no wrong
I dislike what they have done to "our" game

ahhh the umpires, there is another instrument of control! with constant rule changes the technicalities now can alter the games result, since when does running on one side of the line, re interchange worthy of a 50m penalty resulting in a goal, fair bloody dinkum, stone the effyn crows,
also in a game where key positions are really non existent, then to argue that players can be played out of position well maybe, Paul Roos should be dragged to get stoned at the city square for introducing the flooding technique?
Rather than life bans, the MFC officials should be given life memberships for their contributions to football, yes I am a MFC supporter and no I dont ski , have a chalet or drive a range rover haha

I was at that game on the weekend, my 8yo played at half-time through Auskick - proud dad!

(off-topic, but 3.5hr bus trip there & another 3.5hrs back with gastro - I don't recommend it to anyone!)

Whether or not Bailey played his players out of position...there was no stopping Geelong! The game was destined for that result, and to be honest, if Geelong hadn't relaxed as they did, they could've beaten them by at least 5 more goals!

If you think that the clubs employ all those consultants to get the best from their players and not to think outside the square & fix games, then 'you're dreamin'. Even in the lesser leagues have strategic plans set in motion, that have nothing to do with the actual game.

Pitiful game btw!

Holding the ball rule is Dumb Fark confusing, just cant believe that the guy going for the ball has 2-3 players jump in his back with no chance of getting the ball out and gets done holding the ball.
What the game needs is another Kerry Packer to stick it up to the AFL as he did to the then ACB, 12 team comp 4 teams in vic, 2 in SA-WA, 1 in QLD, 1 in NSW,1 Tassie and the last in Darwin.
Each team has a zone to pick players from and can trade any player at anytime during the season, and simplified rules.

Agree totally about holding the ball rule, penalises the player going in hard for the ball. It is the most inconsistant rule and always gets paid more in the last minutes of a game.
Saturdays Eagles vs Doggies, dying minutes, Selwood has the ball for a nanosecond 15 metres from Doggies goal, is gang tackled and taken to ground, holding the ball, goal to the Doggies.
Ball back the centre, bounce, Doggies player caught in exactly the same way, play on. a different interpretation within 30 seconds.
The umpires need to step back and realise the game is not all about them! They unfortunately have the ability to destroy games and often do by paying doubtful free kicks in the dying minutes and can turn the momentum of the game.

How's this for media driven game day commentator rubbish. Dockers game and commentator on TV, Mr R.Walls Esq, reckons that the Dockers player "deliberately" tried to injure another play. Mate that particular media bloke needs to get a life!!! What a loser.
The Dockers player was given a reprimand.... only, but claiming it was deliberate was way out of line.

Next day Dons V Pies, ol mate Tim Watson yelling his head off at Leigh Mathews regarding the same holding the ball issue you indicate. Leigh apparently was/is on the rules committee. In the end the rest of the media TV crew cranked ol Tim up, because his boy was on the end of a Pies flogging.
But for goodness sake, we are near end of the season and Timmy boy is only “now” making the point. And probably only because his little lad was getting a pumbling.

Oh and C'arn the Eagles

Yeah gotta love the way the eagles play. It's kind of "traditional football". You know the traditional strong goal to goal line, strong full back, up and coming CHB, Lynch at CHF, Kennedy at FF and a resting ruck in the forward pocket. Their structure and their long kicking reminds me of my lions of the early 2000's

Right on, and another thing, Umpires have got to wise up to on ballers going in low and then sliding the tacklers arm up over their shoulder. It's a cheap trick and the umps should tell them to stop stageing.

haha poor ol' Timmy got pretty upset over that rule.. Thats the first time they have let him commentate a bombers game from the box instead of boundary riding, and to be fair they were some pretty bad calls.. He can't hide his support for the club, but I don't think anyone was too upset over it..

I enjoy it when commentators let their colours show a little bit.. But 'Pro Carlton' Robert Walls and 'Pro Sexy Players' Bruce McAvaney need to be retired..
