Agree totally about holding the ball rule, penalises the player going in hard for the ball. It is the most inconsistant rule and always gets paid more in the last minutes of a game.
Saturdays Eagles vs Doggies, dying minutes, Selwood has the ball for a nanosecond 15 metres from Doggies goal, is gang tackled and taken to ground, holding the ball, goal to the Doggies.
Ball back the centre, bounce, Doggies player caught in exactly the same way, play on. a different interpretation within 30 seconds.
The umpires need to step back and realise the game is not all about them! They unfortunately have the ability to destroy games and often do by paying doubtful free kicks in the dying minutes and can turn the momentum of the game.
How's this for media driven game day commentator rubbish. Dockers game and commentator on TV, Mr R.Walls Esq, reckons that the Dockers player "deliberately" tried to injure another play. Mate that particular media bloke needs to get a life!!! What a loser.
The Dockers player was given a reprimand.... only, but claiming it was deliberate was way out of line.
Next day Dons V Pies, ol mate Tim Watson yelling his head off at Leigh Mathews regarding the same holding the ball issue you indicate. Leigh apparently was/is on the rules committee. In the end the rest of the media TV crew cranked ol Tim up, because his boy was on the end of a Pies flogging.
But for goodness sake, we are near end of the season and Timmy boy is only “now” making the point.

And probably only because his little lad was getting a pumbling.

Oh and C'arn the Eagles
