Being a smoker for 40 years i have been subject to so much anti-smoking criticism .
Anti-smoking views are so exaggerated, however i do believe smoking is not necessarily a healthy habit.
My question to all you anti-smokers is this : What would you choose to do out of the following choices ?.

1) Stand next to somebody smoking and breathe the `Passive` smoke for 1 minute. or
2) Put your nose upto the exhaust pipe of YOUR car while it is running and breathe in the fumes for 1 minute?.

Do you understand what i am saying here?.
You anti smokers bombard smokers with so much vigor, however you don`t think twice about the incredible amount
of toxic fumes that you force other people as well as yourselves to inhale.
Driving your car down to the local shop would produce more toxic fumes than if a smoker smoked a 100,000 cigerettes
in the same amount of time.
So my challenge to all you anti-smokers is stop driving YOUR cars and polluting my body and i will quit smoking.
Hows that for reality?.

Seems when a subject hits a nerve and there is no defending ones self, comments like yours, are your only way of trying

How about some constructive comments, for starters, answer the question i put forward, and then explain your decision.

People that don`t use underarm deodorant, people with jobs that involve foul odours, people that cycle/jog etc etc.
The world is full of unpleasant smells, but smokers are not tolerated.

Getting back to my original post, i am man enough to admit i am wrong if these anti-smokers/lobbyists with all there facts that they keep pushing, give me some concrete evidence that Fumes from a car are less damaging to the environment and public health than Passive Smoke.
I knew that there would be some negative responses to this post, i also know that most of these negative responses are because
these people like to push there views about what THEY don`t like or agree with, but these same people don`t like it when
they are on the other end and have no legitimate defense/response.
Instead of calling me a troll (i had to google that word to find out what it means) just reply with some facts or something constructive and related to the subject.
You don`t have to agree with what i posted, but try to understand it and not reply with idiotic comments.

I joined this forum earlier today after seeing yet more slurs against smokers, so i am simply standing up for myself as a smoker.
But truly people that drive cars have no right to comment on the detrimental effects of passive smoking.
One car (YOUR CAR) puts out an average of 4.7 metric tons of toxic gases per year, how many cigarettes would i have to smoke per year to equal that ?.
So as i said earlier to all those anti-smokers, sell your car and find alternative transportation or if you think a car is absolutely vital trade it in on a Hybrid vehicle. Anti-smokers are so sure that passive smoke is so bad for their and everyone else`s health, i am saying to you `lead by example`, get rid of your toxic emitting car, then and only then will i believe your concerns.
I am close to 60 years old and have been smoking for 42 of those years, my dad smoked every day of his life he died in his eighties and it was not a smoke related death.
He used to put us on his knees when we were kids whilst smoking.
Eight children all still alive all smoke or used to smoke, my parents oldest child (My sister) is in her late 70`s and still going strong.
People need to stop looking for a scape goat when it comes to the environment and public health issues and start with the priorities when it comes to pollution, surely that would mean starting with motor vehicles , lobbying against Car Manufactures first, then work your way down the list. I think you will find Passive smoke along way down that list.

My local shop is 400 yards away, so I figured I would try and work out how much our car emits compared to your 100k ciggies.

I did a google to try and figure out how much smoke a ciggie releases - but couldn't nail it down - too many variables for a mug like me to understand.
- type of 'baccy, how it is cut, amount of time smouldering/being drawn/temp of the burn and a myriad of other stuff.

Almost everything I found was too hard for me to follow, but the amount of crap in ciggie smoke is scary enough - thousands of chemical compounds / dozens of known carcinogens / many more confirmed as to be toxic.

When I get to the shops, I walk across the carpark and then I have to run a gauntlet through the crowd of smokers who are puffing away at the door.
I don't come home smelling of diesel or petrol fumes - but my wife and kids can certainly notice the reek of ciggies in my clothes.

That is exactly my point, it demonstrates how much more potent / dangerous / bad for public health than Passive cigarette smoke is. Yet people are determined to do what ever they can to ban smoking and yet think nothing of jumping in their cars to go somewhere which sometimes might be within walking distance.
I`m saying, stop crucifying smokers and start cleaning up your own yard first.

The bottom line for me on this subject is :
For the anti-smokers out there, give me some facts/concrete evidence that YOUR car is not more harmful to the environment and the publics health than smoke coming from a cigarette.
If you do come up with proof i will admit i was wrong with my comments and knowledge, i will sincerely apologize to everyone concerned.
If you cannot prove this, then desist with your polluting ways or simply acknowledge that driving YOUR car is a lot more destructive and stop your bully tactics. (anti-smokers that keep pushing their views)

Apparently, our 7 year old car produces 147 grams per km of co2, couldn't find any mention of other nasties.

I have had experiences of how determined anti-smokers can be to get there way.
A previous girlfriend one day told me one of her sisters and sisters husband
were coming up from sydney for a holiday.
She informed me that they would be dropping around to see us that night.

The fact is, when i smoked i always went outside to the patio and closed the sliding door behind me.
Yet she insisted that i ask permission from a couple that i have never met before,
if it was ok to go outside and have a smoke.(my own home)
I stood my ground and it developed into a big argument.
That is the ridiculous lengths that some will go to make sure you realize how much they hate smoking.

It is just simply out of control.

The point here is, there is so much emphasis put on how harmful Passive smoke is, so why aren`t these people trading in their toxic blowing vehicles for a less polluting Hybrid vehicle, why aren`t these people putting in the same amount of pressure on vehicle manufactures to get results as they continually do towards smokers.

As i said earlier `Priorities`, target the worst offender then move on to the next on the Priority list.

All i want to do is enjoy a smoke, yet the reaction is so overboard it is crazy.

I would worry more about living a shorter or more unhealthy life or dying due to the highly modified foods we are sold in supermarkets now. The toxic waters that the fish we consume swim in. The Vehicle pollution. The Chemicals that are sprayed into the atmosphere daily.

As far as i`m aware these are a lot more harmful than passing someone in the street that is smoking.
Every couple of months cigarettes go up in price, that my friends is a form of `blackmail` it is a form of punishment by people

The Government reason for doing this (as i understand) is to cover medical expenses due to illnesses from smoking.

Cars, yep they pollute, but they offset that by taking us places, delivering goods & services - you know; positive things, benefits.

So tell me... what does smoking bring to humanity that is positive or a benefit? (Apart from smokers paying the 'stupid' tax?)



Or here's another way to look at it: Alcohol could be considered a similar thing. No real benefit to society, but I enjoy it and I pay the stupid tax for it. So should be able to do it where I like.

When you smoke, the by product of your smoking is, smoke; its stinks up a large area around you, gets in my eyes, lungs, hair, clothes.

The by product of me drinking alcohol is urine, which ends up in the toilet usually, so doesn't really bother anyone.

You can feel free to smoke around me, showering me in the by-product of your chosen vice if you'll happily let me reciprocate by showering you in the by-product of my chosen vice; in your eyes, lungs, hair, clothes etc.

Again with the Troll thing, not being familiar with forums i`m still not sure why i am being branded.
I am simply putting forward my two cents worth, or is that another option that is taken away from smokers.
It is ok to continually be subject to the voice and opinions (and actions) of anti-smokers whether we want to hear them or not.
But it seems if i (a smoker) want to defend my actions or voice my opinion, then it is somehow being interpreted as Rebellious or i am trying to cause trouble.
It sounds like you seem to expect me (a smoker) to listen and obey because you the anti-smoker are right, and if i question it i am then a trouble maker.

I`m not talking about service vehicles, i`m talking about personal vehicles that are not necessary.
I`m talking to the people that make out that they are so concerned about the damage Passive smoking does to them and the environment, but will turn a blind eye to the fact that the car they drive is so so much more harmful.
As i have said if they are so concerned for there health and the health of others lead by example, use public transport, ride a push bike if possible, trade the car for a hybrid car. How many of you anti-smokers have more than one car at home ?.

If i am here in my unit and have a smoke, surely that is up to me.
I am all for not being allowed to smoke in public places, within reason. Being a smoker doesn`t mean i ignore the fact that some people don`t like the smell, i fully understand that.
But the Health issue is what anti-smokers are using to get there ways.
But tell me how increasing the price of cigarettes every couple of months changes things for you, besides getting a cheap thrill in the name of revenge.

Not many people stick their nose in an exhaust and those that do usually only have one thing in mind. It's not the 'toxic air' that kills them it's the displacement of oxygen molecules by the unnatural and extremely high concentration of carbon monoxide gasses that love to attach themselves to haemoglobin. On any normal day the ambient level of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere is harmless.

Toxic stuff emitted from vehicles is always getting better, has been since the 80's the risks identified, emission standards started and lead removed from fuel.

Yes, my cars' exhaust is less offensive to me than your passive smoke. Happy? Now, go away.
