No, actually I do understand that, GF. Maybe you're missing my point?

From your own link -
http://embryology.med.unsw.edu.au/Defect/page5a.htm - It says:
There is an interesting "American paradox" (see Abel ) that Americans have a relatively low rate of per capita alcohol consumption, yet the USA has the highest incidence of FAS (20 times all other countries) in the world.
Have a read of my earlier comments about "paradoxes".

Also my comments about the European experience... I can't see where they have a huge car stealing bogan problem that's traceable back to brain damaged foetuses.
So what I'm saying is that without much stronger evidence, I'm pretty unconvinced. Certainly not enough to go looking down on young mothers who have an occasional drink.
And before anyone else comes along with the "there is medical evidence suggesting"... just remember, there is some medical evidence to suggest that flouride in the water may not always be a good thing. There is some medical evidence to suggest that immunisation could be a genuine risk. There is medical evidence to suggest all kinds of things could be a Bad Thing for all kinds of reasons. Doesn't mean we should stop doing them all.
