I took up racing bicycles at 51. only D grade but 2.5 years later almost won a 75km handicap race. sprint finishat 55kph. Im loving the races of about 50-60kms manage a 15km ride each day before breakfast and go to work feeling limbered up both physically and mentally. I suspect the mental bit is more important that people realize
Are you boasting about almost winning a race against handicaps...?
bloody oath! I started racing when others of my age retired.. My grade usually breaks up by mid race so its me and the bike against an organized group of younger riders working together. When it is satisfying to even finish almot winning feels awesome. a win isa win.
the handicapping is very carefully calculated based on the latest performance stats available to the club on each individual rider and altered to account for a particular road and conditions. If you don't put in your best effort on the day you will gt smoked. the handicapper can predict race times and finish gaps to within minute by the end of the season
