Initially, Toyota Hilux was a no brainer for me as I love Toyota's reliability. I've got a 98 & 01 Hiace and both going strong.
Now I'm leaning towards a Ford Ranger (Wildtrack or Special edition).

Anybody own either of these ?
Your thoughts ?

One major mining company in WA terminated agreement on that brand of vehicle due to reliability issues.
Not sure if the product has overcome the problems. Concerns with fuel systems ability to withstand extreme use was one issue I was aware of.

Ford ranger overpriced.the newer ones because of the stringent emissions laws are not as good as the post 2014 models ( diesil models).

now weve seen a good test to see which 4 door has a strong enough chassis to last 300,000kms on our crappy roads and coregations. that stiff chassis is why you buy a hilux. when i was working in mines and explooration we called them rolux's as they would go and go until the day somebody drove it like a twit. then we'd save the driveline for the ones that simply rusted through

It's not the chassis strength that's making it fail the moose test. It's the electronic safety aids like stability control that's not doing it's job to prevent the Hilux from losing control.

The rangers and bt50 Mazda exact same bus were raved over but are now showing plenty of faults
ive had hilux,s and I'm on my second triton, hand on heart I've been wrapped with their all round ability
and reliability, the new model is very refined for the price, I use it for trade and rec use pulling my boat into remote spots, never let me down both models to date, certainly worth a trial

Agree with the sentiment gutless engine. Despite all the hype from sales reps, reducing an engine volume, making it bang harder to achieve the same or better outcome just reduces longevity. End result, users chip the hell out of them, and further reduces engine life.

My answer to sales rep who near on had me sold on latest model, Yeer, Narrrr
Particular interest was the lightning snap up of the older engine version models. End users quickly worked out which is/was better

Agreed. The triton will do everything all the other DC 4wds do for 20-30k cheaper and are still worth the same after 5 years or get a new 70 series L/C and do it properly. Ford and holden just don't have the same build quality as the other manufactures these days.

Even then, on a 90k 4wd ute, Toyota failed to address the elephant in the room with its wheel track being out.

Ive got a Colorado but the older type same as dmax. Its been great. I'll either get another dmax or a triton. Tritons 8k cheaper.

Dmax engine has the longest mean time between failure. Theres actually a rating they build the engines to. Understressed truck engine. Tows exceptionally well (better than on paper). All the other fruit not as good. But reliability important to me

N-series truck has the same motor apparently. But why does every practical vehicle have a diesel engine these day? Aren't the smelly old things falling out of favour in overseas markets?

Just looked it up, you can get a hiLux 2wd in petrol. Maybe, being lower to the ground, it'll pass the moose test. Who needs 4wd anyway? A good driver doesn't. When I was a boy there was no such thing.

It is unfair to say that the Hilux is bad, essentially as some other DC4wd's have more car-like handling and do better on the test
On that test there is a range of results from a Zonda or Mclaren, thru to say a top loaded Unimog.
It probably is simply stiffer chassis, anyone who has ever jacked up one corner of a race car will know that.

PS I'm not a DC fan, not a Hilux fan. Just think it is a bit rich.

I did once see a xb ute with a 9 inch do a hill climb a hilux 4wd couldnt get up but to be fair the hilux had bald tyres &it just couldnt get the run up take off speed the 351 did .
I think it is about the driver a lot of the time.
Who has the biggest balls.

I've got a Ranger work ute and hilux personal ute. Ranger tows better and uses less fuel, Hilux is better in sand and handles better on road and off.
Both new models FYI.

And they don't fit our landcruiser sized tracks so cornering can off road can be an issue.

And the paint job quickly gets scratched to the outhouse.

No to mention it looks like bloody brick and then there is the issue with those stupidly small tyres.

I'd be all for driving a massive ute around but not that one.
