similar here, I work in aged care - and my boss has me continually raiding the local coles / woollies / farmer jacks / IGA stores trying to find anything that remotely resembles disinfecting wipes, glen 20, domestos, and a list of stuff that we ordered ages ago - but has been relegated to back-order status.
Even our surgical supply house has run dry on simple stuff like the single use covers for ear thermometers, the boss was pretty chuffed when I scored a few Disney character kids thermometers from coles!

At the risk of upsetting people I will say the same thing happened here in France. I am saying this to try and help.
Cosmetic companies are now making hand gel and wipes etc for free. 3D printing companies are making face shields and anything that can to help. Clothing factories are making masks. My wife is making masks!
It's to try and help and give ideas of what to expect and how to help.

A few million may die from starvation but if its going to stop 10 dying from a strain of the flu we need to shut up shop,effectively putting life on hold for over a billion souls.

Something like 60 000 died last year in the U.S from the flu and no word of a lockdown.

It seems social isolation and good hygiene are our best tools at this stage.
Just sharing a small thing I have done to help improve my hand washing habits. I've set up a towel, soap and water bucket at the bottom of my front stairs (I live in an old queenslander). This is so that I can wash my hands before going into the house (even if I have just been working in the garden).
It's just a small change to encourage good habits.

Ill let you know in a few months if these are any good. Otherwise stay as healthy as possible and follow the guidelines from the government.

I tend to only follow the guidelines from the prime minister, premier and chief medical officer. There is so much contradictory information on FB, SB etc.

i thought they could identify the covid 19 cell from influenza A or B.
hey im not stating i know, i thought influenza A & B was still about without covid 19.
or has covid 19 morphed and replaced influenza A & B for now.

there lies the problem - if there are no [or not enough] test kits - how do you test for it?

The Japanese apparently have millions of test kits that other countrys gave them to test for the Olympics, but now wont give them up, even though they don't need them as they are hardly affected.

There can be no data on how many are *actually* affected because they ceased testing for even flu the middle of last month.

Well there is data, and they are testing, obviously.
Then how do they know they had 140 new cases yesterday if they aren't testing ?

Because they're being admitted to hospital where they are required to be tested and then treated. GPs or their equivalent aren't testing for flu, they're handing out prescriptions for it without testing -- like they used to.

You do understand EVERONE else on here are talking about covid19 , not the common flu or old sars, right ? Just checking.
So Japan are not testing for covid19 anymore ? Are they handing out prescription for that as well ?

Ugh.

They stopped testing for the flu. If you had flu-like symptoms and tested negative for the flu, they'd have to go on to other tests because of their legal obligation to treat you.

So like a blanket quarantine or lock down, rather than assess individual cases, they just handed out prescriptions to deal with the flu symptoms -- you know, the same things SARS gives you -- and when/if it gets critical, you get admitted to hospital. That'll be where the data for Japan comes from.

So, you were saying that the world had given Japan millions of test kits and they weren't using them... you were going to give us a source for that...?

Interesting article, at that level of testing you have no idea of the numbers infected. It seems by design or otherwise Japan will be going the full epidemic route.

Unlikely to prevent corona of course but my sister in law swears by these to help the immune system so we use them in winter. Whether it helps or not, who knows.

She's a nurse in NSW and a week or so ago boarded a cruise ship to do a bunch of testing...
