buy a few cheap mobile phones with a trackable GPS thingie in them.

every couple of days leave one lying around at snout level,

you will have a day of so of tracking time with each one, before collecting it from the "dumping" ground in your back yard for recycling.

I think you need to give me more detail. I don't understand what it is I missed.

There are no implantable chips that would let you track your dog. Its just not available right now, so the only option is to use something on a collar, which is vulnerable to being removed.
