Come on..... It's the oldest scam on the island.

You buy a bag of lawn clippings from the dodgy bloke in the street, his mate the cop up the road is on the deal. He busts you. You're going to jail unless you come up with a couple of hundred, maybe it's a couple of grand now.

You pay the money, realize you were an idiot and get on with your holiday.

You do not not pay, you do not call the media. Unfortunately now the Indos lose face if the charges just disappear, these people have gone the wrong way about it.

Think Michelle Leslie versus Schappelle. One paid, she came home, the other didn't.

True,I've been going over there for years, been offered heaps of drugs on the street. This kid was set up for sure!
Last December I was there on a boys trip and my son and his mate got robbed of two i-phones and wallets, went to the police station to report it for insurance reasons only and was greeted by this very cocky cop.Behind the desk there's a massive sign stating,We are here to service you free of charge!
After an hour of fixing all his mistakes we said thanks to this nob cop.He said hmm maybe you pay me for service,I pointed to the sign and asked him why should I?He replied good for me and could be good for you,I took this as some kind of threat and gave him 5 AUS.After that god help anyone who gets in trouble over there.

Damn Bali cops... last time I was there, stupid mother farker cop extorted money from me for "supposedly" having my motorcycle front tire over the white line at some traffic light... said I had to go with him to the station if I didn't pay a fine there and then... I had a couple pills, weed and shrooms on me so I didn't argue... he clocked me coming out of club 66.

If it is that easy to do, set someone up, then you have to consider whether in fact that was the case.

Who could potentially gain from this?

We all know how this is going to play out. The media are going to have a field day for as long as it lasts so they have to go to the top of the list. Then you have to consider anyone who may want to distract the media away from current events in Australia. Must be a few of them. The legal profession will make a bomb out of it. The anti marujuana mob have a barrow to push. Plenty of dissaffected muslims over there.

And then again it may just be circumstance

Can't help feeling sorry for the little bugger. He must be terrified.

I was there twenty years ago and leaving the surf these bloke would try and give it to you. After one day when they threw it between my arm and board and i swung at him the cops came down and told the bloke in front of me not to hassle me again this week."Waste of time he said"

Jeez, hope you kidding about the gear.! we might see you on the news one day !

I feel sorry for him as he must ****e scared. In Australia we make a stoopid decision like this and we cop a fine. over there we get a stay in the clink or in the case of of more major offences, the death sentence.
I hope they bring him home soon.

I agree i hope they bring him home soon. Mostly i hope he learns a huge lesson.

I don't think Corby had the opportunity to use the get out of jail free card. Caught with 4kg of pot at the airport in the public domain doesn't allow too many options. i don't think the Corby's were too flush with money either.

Leslie was caught with 2 pills at a dance party. She had resources/money to talk her way out as she was tied up with the Suttons boy. I recall her situation was helped due to a Indo politician's son was in her company as well which could be quite embarrasing if the media ran with the story. I recall she converted to Islam and wore the hijab in court which helped.
Leslie certainly played her cards well with the resouces at hand.

Corruption starts on your arrival, customs will check your duty free alcohol and if you are over they will either try and take it off you,ask for a massive amount which is normally twice what it cost you or in my case I offer then 10 AUS after telling them that,s what it cost me.Sometimes they will take you away in this little room to do the deal.

On departure, the same thing happens with liquid, last trip our flight was delayed so we hang around till 2am in the airport and watched the shift manger divvy out the days takings!

I'm just saying that if his parents and him were a little wiser to the ways of Asia they could have handed over the money in 'fines' and none of us would have known about it.

They have taken it public giving the Indo's no way to back down at this time.

Now the young fella is gonna rot for a year or so until the attention dies down and he can be bought out of jail at another time and place.

This is an old scam, they played their cards wrong.

The question above was who would gain??? The corrupt cop that had to buy his uniform and gun and gets paid nothing would gain. Every time they nab someone in this way he get a years wages. I'd imagine he is spewing about this, missed chance to make a quick buck.

I have friends and customers that have been in Bali for upwards of 15 years, some of the stories they tell you are amazing.

edit: if you dont quite get the gist the 'fine' is not exactly official, you pay the money and it goes straight into the back pocket. Just like Macs customs fees.

also, youd probably find it wasnt even pot in the bag

Yeah I see your point CMC. I have never been there and would not think to say to the cops "how much to get my kid out of prison?" cos that is against the grain for Aussies. Maybe they should have, but now its too late

But then I agree with Bulldogpup - ya get what ya pay for and I really can't see the attraction of holidaying in a sh!thole that is corrupt and if something bad happens to you is the Govt or Police there really going to help?

I'll take my holiday at a beach location in Australia once every 3 years over a trip to Bali every year as some people do.
"Oh but we got t- shirts for $1" scream the ladies. So fkn what.

Na, when in Bali I don't drink... gives me a hangover and I feel like crap the next day.
Shrooms on the other hand make you feel great then and the next day... no acting stupid, just good vibes and nice colours.
You can have shroom omelettes, tasty and psychedelic.

Dried shrooms (what I had on me), are to keep the good times rolling a little longer.
It's the only reason I go to Bali... only thing going for the place.

If the kid was going to smoke some weed on the beach, sounds like he was doing the right thing.

I think the only really sad thing here is, that people feel the need to incarcerate other people for living their life.

If someone gets drunk and violent, lock the farker up.
If someone uses a medicine to help contemplate the magnificent's of life, leave him be.

I'm going to incarcerate you for consuming a weed... what kind of farked up logic is that?

I never have been able to understand the appeal of going to bali, as mentioned cheap corrupt 3rd world country, but plenty of people with money go there

I do hope the kid gets home soon and learns a lesson.

I went to Bali in 88, 95, 98 & twice in 99. I had great times over there.
But after a recent 15 night holiday to Fiji, I wouldn't go back.
Fiji wins hands down IMO.
If they can fit 4kg into Corby's body board cover then they could stash half a tonne into my 14ft Sup board cover.

Let's assume the brother put it in there, do you think Shapelle was aware ?
It was a bloody big bag of pot. They didn't conceal it very well did they ?
I believe she is innocent. I base this solely on that IMO nobody could be that stupid to pack 4 kg's of pot into their body board cover and hope and prey they don't get searched (I'm aware this wouldn't stack up in court). It appeared way too risky. Why not pack it into the inner lining of a suitcase ?
