Na it was on the ABC, on a show from the chaser guys, they were talking about canned Tuna how it is caught etc and the bycatch of sharks and everything else so just wondered what the actual numbers were.

And the dolphin free label being a myth as where the tuna fishery is there aren't many dolphins anyway.

I just looked on YouTube but couldn't find the segment.

Its understood from industry insiders that leave the game, that the Tuna guys knock heaps of GW's on the head. But they would never admit it as its a criminal offence So your guess is as good as mine.

Sorry Toph i thought i had answered it. There is no need for a plan incase people don't get along. It is a community meeting that you need to pay a small fee to enter. Anyone who goes along will be their for the right reason and hopefully to learn something new. As i said there will be people from all sides of the argument and opposite side of politics as well..

I just feel this post has already been dragged down to a us and them argument again. May be my post have also been the cause of that. I don't know, I just wondered if it had been considered.

Yeah it always does, i guess we just can't help ourselves. I don't think there ail be any trouble, unless hell freezes over and Legion turns up

Hey guys, please don't take any offence or read any more into it, i'm tired and don't have the capacity to word it better just now?..It will rapidly become apparent that the day is more intelligent than the usual for/against debate. The focus will be 100% on alternatives. It's a structured event with speakers given allocated time slots to discuss their topic then Q&A at the end with a chair/moderator to ensure things stay on track. So those with a genuine interest in learning are so welcome but any hecklers please find alternative entertainment :)

It seems to be that when humans meet face to face arguments can run their course so much more rapidly (without scope for misinterpretation that often happens via other media) and a huge amount of common ground can be found. In the case of sharks this seems especially true when emotions run high. To be honest, in my experience this forum wins the prize for the speed at which things head south, lol!

Sailhack we'll endeavour to get a transcript from the speakers & I'll post it here for those that can't attend in person.

Anything chemical proven? If so, any side effects on humans?

Spotting and tagging? Already done, doesn't prevent anything but not a bad thing. Expensive and dependent on coverage.

Also just to clarify when you look to register the sold out tickets refers to a small amount that were on sale to cover costs. That has been done and the rest is just general admission price of FREE. Although their is an option to donate to help if your so inclined. Just wanted to point out this is not actually a money making issue as a few would have you believe.

We do need to make an effort to help ourselves i believe..

Have a look at the above link Legion. Wounded bleeding Tiger Sharks are being released almost every day off our beaches, how exactly do you reckon this is making us safer? Our government has made a decision because they thought it would buy support, it hasn't and now they've dug their heels in. There are a group of passionate people out there that want genuine solutions to keep everyone safe so they are doing what the government won't and showcasing a variety of solutions. One of the big issues is that there are some really clever people out there working on real solutions to protect people but they can't get the funding or can't get through the red tape to allow testing of their products.
So bag it as much as you like, meanwhile others will work towards something that benefits the safety of all water users without having to kill off every shark and give our kids an opportunity to enjoy the ocean as a completely functional ecosystem that hasn't been totally sanitised for our use.

IF Sharks are not attacked to blood, why bother..

What fishos.trawlers etc don't throw undersized ,injuried fish back?what is there a difference with taking one from the Eco system and not the other?

Well actually commercial fishing was banned in our local waters. So no they don't really. Also 2.5 mtr fish with a head wound (They have nearly all had large head wounds from the type of hook being used) is going to bleed a lot more than say a hearing with any type of wound..

On Friday night a shark was noticed on the drum lines at 5:45 at night. Fisheries were notified but did not want to return until the next day. SO that shark would have stayed on that drum line thrashing around at best until the next day, at about 9 ish. So 11 hours of thrashing around, possibly bleeding heavily already (Often the head wound is mostly made worse when fisheries actually pull the shark on board by the line and hook. Hence thoroughly setting the hook right through the head)

All that less than 1 km from shore. Stories like this are weekly, even daily

Luckily it accidentally fell of sometime during the evening

I guess you could also say no difference this then a dead herring floating around, or even a dead whale floating around. All the same and wouldn't attract in sharks as they are all part of the same ecosystem

Its a silly argument to say sharks won't be attracted in by blood, struggling fish or a dead carcass floating in the water column..

I'm talking about that what is the difference between catching whiting or catching shark,is there really any their both fish..Shouldve been up north over the last week or so if your worried about all that blood.Big big week I hear.Shouldve got one the dudes in the love and peace boats to unhook the poor fluffy little bugger

To the importance of any the eco system id say the shark is a little more important..
I guess you could compare the idea of who is more important to a company, a cleaner or the CEO or general manager? You need both really but the CEO is a lot harder to replace. Just like the sharks..

Blood in the water is fine, just not near my beaches thanks
