Looking to put some new tyres on my Hilux and I do a lot of beach running.

Who uses what and how good are they?

For running on the beach id go with bare feet, but a light weight Nike with out socks should work ok

BF Goodridge All Terrain on my cruiser. Good on the highway and great in sand. 15 inch wheels help with footprint.

Yea I have 15 inch alloys, the stock Hilux ones. Thats a good start.

Are you looking for mainly a beach/sand track tyre? I've had a few different models the better traction in the sand usually the more noise and poorer handling on the road if your not after something particularly hard core a good AT tyre will do great but get yourself a set of staun valves (ive never been bogged with tyres at 15-18psi) and a decent 12v compressor to pump up before you get back on the blacktop tyres will last longer and be a lot safer.

Yep they are on the shopping list, Ive got goodyear something on there at the moment.

In before blokes with softroaders say "highway" tyres .

I've used a few tyres now but my current set of 32" AT3w Falken Wildpeaks have been fantastic. Cheaper than BFG's, wear is great and they have been fantastic in the sand. Haven't staked them and haven't been bogged in the sand since putting them on and i got bogged a lot with other tyres

Pretty good $$ as well.

Highway terrain (HT's) are surprisingly capable in soft sand but you're stuffed if you clip a covered up rock or bit of driftwood. And they look lame on a 4wd.

To be honest, in my experience on sand its more about how much your rim/tyre combo "bags out" when you run low pressures. A low profile tyre just doesn't bag out. HT's bag out more than Mud terrain (MT's) at the same pressure but that's because they have less sidewall support.

Generally for mon-fri on blacktop and weekends on sand, the BFG KO2 All Terrain (AT's) are the benchmark. Thats what I'm next getting on my old runabout hilux which currently has Kumho AT's 31x10.5 on a 15" rim. Got 60,000Km on them which is ok considering the price and my driving style. With these sometimes I get stuck at 20 psi on soft sand, drop to 15 psi, then with a bit of back and forth run ups managed to get going again. My landcruiser I run 265 x 70 on 17" MT's and have never been stuck at 18 psi, but its got way more power.

Falken wildpeak AT. 189 ea. In the states they have the same mileage guarantee that coopers do -50000 miles (80k) .

Did they do the wheel alignment at your house ? That must be some rig they have set up for it did you get a full print out of all your angles ? What an awosme service to set the alignment on someone's door that's top notch.

Never been terribly bogged
No need for fancy rapid deflators
Buy a cheap gauge from repco when their 12v compressors are on sale, they're awesome

Chunky patterns just dig you in.
You need float over the top (bagged out) and a non aggressive pattern.
Always have a laugh at muddies on 4WD's that never see mud and almost all their 4WD'ing is on sand.

A highway pattern with LT construction would be fine, or if you must go AT's to not look silly, the one with the least open pattern you can find would be the go.

Get a valve key and pull out the valve, listen for when it starts to whistle, put valve back in. - usually 15psi.

Get your timing right and you can get all 4 done in not much over what it takes to drop 1.

Yeah sort of - I find tyres with a bit of bite get going from a standstill far easier in soft sand and have more control when turning. Any difference in float can be made up with a psi or 2 less air. I have used pretty "soft" AT tyres, but now use BF's. They are indestructible and have good bite for control and getting going. Wouldn't recommend MT's though. I have never had them but I have a mate who used them for a while and they sucked in sand.

I get at least 100 000km out of my BFs on dual cab utes. I now have a Patrol on their first set so I can't give any idea of mileage on that.

Plus they start scalloping on the black tar, and get progressively and noisy

I usually just use Highway tires. I really like the quieter road noise and really only ever go on beaches. Not really had any issue..

So did u get a four wheel alignment with print out ? Or just someone with a set of prehistoric gauges taking a stab at the toe ??

If your happy with them, no biggy. The road noise of some tires is unbelievable. I get if your off roading properly, but i actually use the Dunlop standard tires that come out on the Toyotas. They dont wear long, maybe 50000 kms, but the price justifies them. The last set i bought for $500 for 5 brand new of a mates hilux..You can buy those tyres new (removed by dealers because some sucker bought AT's) for around $150 each.

There are definitely better tyres out their, but im getting old and like the quiet..

PS the last time i got bogged was thanks to technology and traction control..Let the tyres down, and nearly all 4wds will walk anywhere, as long as you have the ground clearance..
