Love my 850 V1 Sk8 for tow & prone, but the 3XS monobloc fuse/Carving180 tail it came with has a pretty aggressive low end stall winging, which limits use in lighter conditions. Not able to shell out for new front wing rn.

Has anyone tried chucking Downwind monobloc fuse/tail on a Sk8? Thinking perhaps longer fuse & higher aspect tail of the Downwind monoblocs might add significant low end and/or reduce the suddenness of the stall?

Happy to tradeoff off some of the roll sweetness of the Sk8 in order to spend more time on it with wing/trashbag

edit: any feedback if their 'Carving W XS 161' fuse/tail paired with a sSk8 improves the low end stall significantly?

You can shim the stab. Start there before you look at a new one. Electrical tape/ sticky back on the topside of the connection - multiple layers to adjust your shim.

I've also used the Sk8 850 with Carving XXXS 180 and Sk8 650 with Carving XXXS 160 for Wingfoiling as that was how they delivered it. I got used to it but always though I would push harder in turns but didn't trust the Tail. Also it was very pitch sensitiv.

Then got the new Carving XS 140 for the 650 and DW XS 145 for the 850. Man that was a real game changer. Not only did I earn more pitch stability that allowed me to carve way harder with the 650. The 850 seemed to be a different foil. Way more low end and way more glide.

But saying all this as a Wingfoiler. I don't do Prone or something like Para or paddel up.

And yes, with the DW 145 XS you will loose a bit of the skaty feel. That was the reason why I then sold the 850 Frontwing and got the Eagle 790. Even more glide and same low end as SK8 850.

I'm on the Sk8 850 v2 and have the 141w tail on it mostly. Fastest and best turning setup. Have ridden it back to back with my 170DW tail that I cut down to around 155. The DW tail improves low end take off yes - sooner and more gradual lift, less nervous/maneuverable overall, and a bit more glide. At the cost of speed and turning. But it's an option for lower wind take offs (don't expect huge differences/improvements though), or when dealing with turbulent messy big swell with lots of energy in all directions to tame the foil a bit. Would love to try the 161w or the 160 to see if that has a similar low end as the DW tail without sacrificing the turning as much.

Only winging, but I never found the 750 V1 to have low stall speed. I've always used it with a W141 XS. I initially tried it with a Carving 140 XS and it was too loose (but not unmanageable). Also tried it with a DW145 (easiest stab, but too locked in) and with a Carving XXXS 160 (found it really unbalanced in pitch, could not get comfortable with it at all).

The stalling when winging's most apparent when getting up on foil in marginal conditions, have stuffed around a fair bit with board trim - mast position, stance position & width - as well as pump depth & cadence, but havent been able to overcome that nasty drop out in the light stuff. Per original post, no issues with the Carving 180 fuse/tail for prone and tow, or winging with decent power, love it. But taking the 850 out in ocean bumps, need to be able to get up without too much work, AND for learning parawing i need to find easiest takeoff possible for the SK8.

@KingCrash > appreciate suggestions that dont just involve throwing $$ at.Do you reckon that added lift from shimming might alleviate stalling on marginal winging takeoff? will DEF give it a try

@Faff > have gotten used to the pitch-sensitiveness of the Carving fuse/tail, but not overcoming this takeoff stalling. Would you go with a Carving W or a DW tail to address this?

yeah, the XXXS fuse is fast twitch, took lotsa stacks to get used to, but cool with it now.
From your feedback the W161 XS should help with the takeoff stalling with minimal impact on turns on swell...

I haven't tried the Carving W as it is thicker and therefore slower than the normal.

The DW will add more pitch stability and gain more forward orientation. That should help with less stalling speed.

Hard to say if you can start earlier with the DW 145 compairing to the Carving 160. I've never used the c 160 with the SK 8 850.

I have anyway no issues with getting up on Foil as I've only 62kg

still waiting for some knots to give shimmed tail a go.
what's the thinking behind shimming that monobloc connection, adds some lift angle in the back to counteract front foil dropping out?

All of my xxx stabs are gathering gust as I ride Sk8's almost exclusively. I stumbled onto a xx180 and now i only using xx or longer. I thought I loved the triple, but no more. I saw a table of new stabs on the way from F-One that seem to reflect this. A few months from now we get a huge selection of smaller carve stabs with even smaller sizes in the single and double x config....I can't wait!

It's all been said above. Ride the Sk8 850 with the xxxs 180, but prefer both the xs 140w and xs 145 dw. For me, the 145 is fast and stable and the 140w more roll. Both great pitch stability.
But the cheapest option is to try the shimming advice above and see if you can get a satisfactory outcome without the $s.

By 140w do you mean 140 Csrve or 141 Winging?

I've used Carving 140 XS vs. DW 145 XS back to back in differnt conditions with my Sk8 650 during the last 3 weeks.

The Carving 140 XS is faster or at least feels faster. It is more playful and agile. Rides easier upwind.

The DW 145 XS has even more pitch stability, glide and pumps better thru lulls.

I'd say the DW 145 has a little bit better lowend but that's definetly just a tiny little bit. Maybe it's only because it gives you more frontfoot pressure and therefore helps when starting/pumping

appreciate the Sk8 tail feedback Thomas, thanks man! Havent had any wind to try shimmed tail yet, but been towsurfing my 850 quite a bit, really fine tuning foot placement and pump weighting to squeeze max glide out of it
