According to James Casey mentioned on his podcast they're also working on a prone foil version FYI.

I would love to see these integrated into production boards and built tough to withstand bigger waves. This is just the very first version, in a few years these will get really really good.

I could imagine using these in big surf thats hard to get onto. Also in small surf that's hard to get onto, also downwind, Damn now I want one!

I want one too! I also tried an efoil for the first time last weekend. Another thing I want but am not going to spend the money on.

I am on the long long waiting list for a Boost fin, which is a much lighter low-end version of this, but I hope might have just enough power to push me up onto foil in situations where it's just barely kinda almost but not quite. The dream is opening up those days that are not quite doable.

An efoil I think would probably be a bit boring after a few sessions. The foil drive has lots of benefits and I'm pretty keen to see were this goes...

*Isn't the boost fin a moulded traditional fin with a propeller? How could you use this with a foil board?

efoil....only used it 5-10 minutes...initial reaction is kinda wow, which surprised me. All the good feelings that foiling brings, but without hassling with wings or kites or paddling. The real test will come with the folding prop, if it allows getting into a wave and then depowering, and getting a surfy feel. Matters not, as I am not spending $10k+. But I can appreciate the appeal for those with such play budgets.

boost...correct. My intention was to either install an fcs foil box behind my mast, and cut down the fin end as much as possible. Or to zap strap it to mast base. The goal is to get the 8 second burst while the board is on water surface, with just enough push to get the board unstuck, with pumping taking it from there. If youthful sup foilers can get up on foil just with vigorous paddling/pumping, then even a small blip of power may be enough to get it up. Then once up, the fin is out of the water, so no further drag. I figure it's worth $200 to find out anyway.

I bought an EFoil last year and bought a wingfoil as a Plan B when it looked like covid supply chain issues might mean the EFoil wouldn't arive for summer. The focus was on the EFoil because I was hit by an escooter and wasn't sure I'd be able to use a wing again.
Anyway.
I think the best place for an efoil is a hire/school arrangement as it's very easy to learn but gets a bit boring after a few sessions. I wouldn't take mine in the waves because I don't think it's strong enough. Wingfoiling is so much more interesting and challenging but in a Windy City like Wellington it can be a bit TOO challenging for people, and efoils on nice days are a great fit for those people.

I'd sell mine tomorrow but my wife LOVES it and it's something for us to do together at the beach on calm days.

The appeal of the FoilDrive for me is opening up the marginal winging days, but also the possibility of an efoil for a lightweight like my wife. Ben, one of the FoilDrive owners, is 70kg in a wetsuit and can get up on an Axis 1020 no trouble, but hasn't tried to run the battery down to see how long it lasts. I'm waiting for him to get back to me!

I noticed there's a company making booster fins for surfing. I don't think they have delivered any and it looks kind of flimsy, but the price point is very low too: boostsurfing.com

I hope to see "foil booster motors" settle to a sub $1000 price range. On a marginal day, I could plug one into the Tuttle box on my board (foil is on double US, so the Tuttle is unused and accessible) instead of pumping up a larger wing or changing to a larger foil.

There's no comparison with eFoils as the booster is just for an initial speed boost to help the wing. You need a fraction of the power of a full eFoil for a fraction of the active time (also reducing issues with cooling and continuous power output).

Couple of us in Taranaki have got the foil drives . Think I read at full power it will last around 12 minutes. Or maybe 8 minutes. But using it as designed it gets over 2 hours quite easily If you are coming up sometime bring your efoil and we could have a try of each other's gear.
