Ive just updated my mast and fuselage, good wind today.

My watch told me ,I was doing 128kph,Id brought some good gear, but.

See if either of these suit your needs.

I use Hoolan on the apple watch. Amazing app that gives you stats like succesfull transition percentage, average speed, jumping height and more.
Currently only works on apple watch, does not export but I enjoy seeing those stats after a good session.

For max speed you need to set 1sec record interval. Windsurf speed sailors used GPS Results post session PC software to get rid of spikes but even that left some in so most sailors look at 10 sec average to be most meaningful max. When my Garmin Fenix 2 shows max it looks like a 10sec averaged max.
Windsport Tracked on phone will record real-time, and also post session analyse .gpx files from watches, but doesn't filter spikes to 2 sec max are unbelievable but 10 sec averages look credible.

Hoolan works really well, thanks for the tip!
I'd been using 'Dawn Patrol" which all in all works pretty great also. It splits your track into 'waves' as it's mainly for prone but that's not such a bad thing for winging i.e. for later analysis. Hoolan has a much better main screen up on the watch in use, should lead to some spectacular crashes while I'm staring at it

I use the in-built apps on my Garmin and that automatically uploads the data to the Garmin Connect web site.

The web site and the iphone/ipad apps give me average speeds and general stats. The Windsurf Garmin app gives 5 and 10 second averages. You can zoom in on sections of the speed graph and see what is happening at a small scale. If your speed has doubled over one or two seconds then you should be suspicious that the peak is an error.

I don't trust max speed from any watch based app. The technology simply isn't accurate enough to give a realistic number. You need much better devices and use the various error correction infrastructure to remove the errors.

What I do is export the GPS data from the web site in GPX format, then use an app like GPX Viewer to see the data in a table format. From there it is easy to copy/paste the data into Excel and slice and dice the data any way you want.

I usually sort the speed data into speed order and plot it onto a graph. You end up with an S-shaped curve. It's easy to eyeball it and exclude the high and low peaks leaving you with a realistic speed range in the flattish part of the graph.

These graphs are from a wingding session. No speed runs but heaps of extended glides on chop, and a few falls.

Raw speeds from the GPS:

Sorted. The left side is hanging in the water. The bump on the left would be gybes. The right side is blips up to 20 knots which may or may not be plausible.

This is the kind of analysis you get from the Waterspeed app. Apple Watch is pretty handy for tracking, but you can use your phone as well. The results can be viewed in the phone as well as on a web app shown below.

Wow, Waterspeed even tells you how you're feeling. Now that really is worth paying for
I thought Waterspeed was great as well though it didn't work for long before they had their hand out $. I'm sure it's worth whatever they're charging but it appears Hoolan is offering almost identical analysis for free (you have to figure out how you're feeling yourself). The downside is it only works with an Apple watch so far. There isn't even any advertising so far so maybe it's just the developers hobby to create apps?

Love that graph! This would be a great way to compare sessions, for example to look at speed with different foils. Here's an example:

This is a comparison of winging with a large (2000) wing and windfoiling with a skinnier 1100 FR wing. "Top speed" differs only by 2 knots, but the flats in the middle show that 4 knots is the typical difference in speed.

If you look at your speeds on a computer, you may want to check out GPS Speedreader at ecwindfest.org/GPS/GPSSpeedreader.html - but no phone or tablet versions.

Thx everyone for your time and effort.

I used Garmin wind sports yesterday and it worked well, only trouble was it showed how bad a foiler I am.

the speed seemed a lot more reasonable 22-30kph when on foil.

there's an app out which you pay for, that supposedly shows time on foil, speed, not sure how good it is.

You can see that almost instantly looking at the speed graph in Garmin Connect. The dips in speed to zero are crashes and falls. The dips to about half the average are gybes. The bits in the middle are all riding on foil. The peaks are probably the big push you get from a wave, usually followed by zero because you've face planted.

In Garmin Connect (both browser and app) you can zoom in on the speed graph and see what was happening around the exceptions. A big spike out of context with the surrounding data usually means an error. That is usually reflected with a section of straight lines sticking out on the map path.
