My query is what is optimal volume board to learn wingfoiling given my specific circumstances?
- 6'4", 97kg rider
- novice windfoiler, but can pump sail energetically to get onto foil
- current setup is 6m Wasp on my Windfoil board, a 1m wide Formula board with 1700cm2 Supercruiser foil mounted right at the tail of the board - yes wrong board for winging
- I've only been out with the wing 4 times so far. Was only enough wind to foil 2 times, so I only have about 5min practice at winging on the foil so far
- will be learning in fairly flat water, but with gusty winds

120l, 140l, 160l, 180l?
im thinking 140l might be the sweet spot

Given your abilities/experience, I'll bet you will be fine on a 120, especially if the water is not too choppy. Bigger will be easier but only for the first few sessions.

120/125 Litres will be perfect for you. Your progression will rapidly improve by having the mast more forward from the edge of the board.

I am 105kg and started on a 8' foot 150L board. Too BIG. Went down to a 125L 6'5" board and that was perfect for learning on. Am now at a 110L 6' foot board but I had to work hard initially to learn how to get up onto my feet.

I did try a 95L board and could get going without too many dramas, but it was always so much effort just getting to my feet that it was not worth the expended effort in choppy conditions.

I'm your height and weight and find my 125 Hover just right.

You already have bit of a back ground with it all and with the wing it's not like you have to learn how to paddle a shorter board so i feel that 6'5 length would be fine

Agree. I'll be looking for something 120 - 140l, 6'5" - 6'10".

In my limited experience, width is equally important when starting. I'm 75kg and have a 115l 6'x26.5" board. The volume is fine but the width made it very difficult to get up in choppy conditions to start with.
