Hi! Got a used Unifoil Hyper 170 and Vortex 175 coming in soon for the winter. Will be getting the short stab but unsure what tail suits my use (66-67kgs wet). Mostly for winging in 2-3 (occasional 4) foot wind chops and small waves, i.e. carving turns on the face (main focus), jumps heading out & some "bump downwind flagging" .. so will appreciate any user feedback on how the Carver 16 and Flare 14 tails feels and performs in these conditions. Thanks ahead

We have the Hyper 150, 170, 210 and 250. Find the carver 16 works well with the 210 and 250 (also a chopped down 16 works well). The Race 18 works better with the 150 and 170. We have the shorter fuselage as well. This is the same preference for a 50kg rider and 80kg rider. The conditions we ride are similar to yours. Carving turns on the face no problem at all with the 18 but get added bonus of a decent amount of pump for downwind flagging. On the 150 or 170 don't notice a real difference in turnability or jumpability between carve 16 and race 18, but the race 18 pumps better. Not tried the Flare 14. Looking forward to getting the Vyper :)

sounds like a one or two race tails chopped to requirements is way to go . will update once I get all the kit together and have a few weeks putting the foils to work

Haven't chopped the race tails yet so would be interested to know how you get on. Think going to make a smaller race tail in our machine to vacuum food ?? . Made a carve 16 previously with this method and it performs as good as the original.

Did the chop! down to 14" on an older 18" Unifoil race stab, and ran it with a Hyper 170, 75cm mast and short fuse at Cottesloe & South Passage, Lancelin yesterday and it's good! Balanced and cranks upwind to head our back (no channel, so lots of roller climbing or just jump the feathering walls) ... glides down a wave well and pumps good of the tail end of the broken wave. All in all, very nice setup for blasting around, bump and jump and small waves.

Do you round off the chopped ends? Still wonder if it will make a difference carving

Really useful to get your feedback on chopping the race tail - I was nervous to do it but feel confident now.

I have been riding a Naish HA1040, short fuse and the HA220 stab, feels similar to the Unifoil Hyper 170, short fuse and chopped 14" ?? .. maybe a just tad bit looser in the carves and jibes .. pumps better than with the 18" stab (I have 2 stabs, chopped one) .. have fun

an update .. after talking to a 'tail geek' mate here, rounded off my chopped 13-1/2" race stab and its driving thru my jibes a bit more 'on a berm' .. works with both my Vortex 175 (carves nuts smooth and tight on 1-2ft wind chops!) and Hyper 170 (swell gliding + river lawn mowing) .. with short fuse
.. also been using my Wavechaser 140F (4'6" 35L) a but as my main 60L sled is at the doctors, so my update my experience in the 'stink bug' chat in a bit
