I am looking to make a 2 piece boom for my Duotone Slick Wings.
Has anyone tried making one?
How did it go?
Any tips or pitfalls to avoid?
I am thinking of buying the end pieces, some 25 mm carbon tube and 20 mm carbon tube, push button clips and fishing rod grip shrink tube and having a go.
Intended so I may pack the boom with the wings when flying.

Slingshot do a two piece carbon boom for their wings. Worth having a look at and copy what they have done.

Buy a adjustable carbon sup paddle handle and chop it?

Slingshot do a two piece carbon boom for their wings. Worth having a look at and copy what they have done.

funny you should suggest the slingshot boom
It has quite a large diameter
I was looking to see if the silver miniboom fittings may slot straight onto it if I cut it down
I think the Slingshot small piece is only about 400mm long and the long one is 1100 mm long so I would look at cutting the long one down maybe
The duotone mini boom is around 1250 mm as I recall

Last weekend I was flying from Hawaii with Duotone Platinum boom. Very light. Easy to carry. No problem in a plane.

bottom line, it flexes marginally. Enough for me to not use it lol ??

Had a go at making one myself. I picked up a platinum boom that had part of the grip coming away. cut the damaged grip off and replaced with a double layer of shrink rod grip. I cut the boom in two and epoxied a carbon ferrule in and fitted spring clip
Came up nicely. I will try it next time I wing.

this is how DT's Klaas Voget handles the boom matter - it's a standard Fanatic adjustable paddle he uses !

felt like a normal boom. No movement at the join. Very happy with it.
Making another - just because I can - from bits from Amazon and the end bits from Duotone spares.

Thanks! Cool. About what I expected, and 482 gms for a home made two piece seems reasonable. I make these home made one piece 26mm diam carbon booms that come in around 309 grams for less than $90 usd per copy. So almost 60 grams lighter and a significant $ savings over those pricy Duotone SLS Platinum carbon booms. I've never felt the need for a two piece boom since I generally travel with my board, but I certainly understand the motivation to have a two piece. Should mention I invested in 3 new 2024 DLab Slicks (6, 5, and 4m) so keeping the boom light seemed appropriate for these bad boys

We do make an annual January(ish) trip from North Carolina to Melbourne (Aus), and always traveling with the board is so-not-fun, so I bought a second board and made an extra boom to keep there.

I guess if you have the need for a 2-piece, then the extra weight is OK. 1 meter of the fishing pole heat shrink grip weighs about 65 grams, so it's a pretty significant part of the total weight budget.

For strength, I would be tempted to make the back of a 2-piece boom a bit shorter than the front so that the joint is as far as possible from the part that you are holding. Probably doesn't matter...

I made 4 booms from ice hockey sticks for myself, two long ones for my 5.0 and two short ones for my 3.5. The bare hockey stick without added grip is great in the winter, but it does get a little bit more slippery if you get it wet in the summer. The cost of making these is pretty hard to beat because the carbon sticks were salvaged from dumpsters at an ice hockey rink nearby. I wanted a lighter boom that is also warmer to hold than the standard aluminum boom.

I was commenting on the 2-piece boom where it was clearly used. My first home made boom had a cork mat grip and it was nice to hold and warm, but not very durable. The heat shrink grip is rather dense, so while it gives you good grip, it doesn't do much in terms of thermal insulation and it weighs a lot even though it's not all that thick. Ease of application and replacement (although I have yet to see any actual damage on my booms) is also definitely a bonus. And it's pretty cheap too.

A good windsurfing boom grip foam will be lighter and feel warmer.

I used 24 mm outer diameter with 20 mm inner diameter carbon tube and 20 mm outer diameter and 16 mm inner diameter carbon tube for the ferrule. It feels rock solid and not heavy. The smaller diameter is much more comfortable than the aluminum boom that weighs 600g.
I checked out where my hands usually go on the boom so the join and the button clip would not be in the way. I also had the button clip on the opposite side to where your fingers grip.
I have not noticed the join or clip at all in use.
