Currently using a straight 6' comp surf leash. I'd like to get an 8' coiled board waist leash (either Armstrong or ION)-not looking to deal with the weight and bulk of a retractable leash. Do they encourage the board to snap back when crashing? Anything else to know?

I love mine and I am just using a cheap coiled surf leash attached to the back of my kiting harness. There is no concern with snap back and no annoying leash drag on the water's surface.

Me too, board just gets held up in the water and doesn't snap back, leash doesn't drag, easy on and off, downside is, sometimes tangles with the hand wing leash - not much you can do about that really. I found a shortish hand wing leash and the coiled waist leash left my mind free to focus on the winging and it really helped

I use a coiled leash and I've never experienced any snap-back.. Go for it.

I use an 8ft Balin coiled waste leash. Love it. Won't go back to leg leash for winging in flat water or small swell. I haven't as yet surfed with a windwing. Still learning the windwing.
Less tangles or time untangling from wing leash.
But yes. You can get a quite minor snap back as I was a little surprised in my last session about 4 days ago. But it was minor & slow and you should always expect it in case.
I use an 8ft leg leash when SUP foiling at my local shoulder to head high pushy waves as it gives me the feel to be able to pull my board back or not with my leg after falling off.

been using coiled waist and arm straps. what i find annoying is they sometimes get locked together and need to yank them apart, plus the coil flaps and slaps about when pumping the wing hard

i'm surprised i even remember, it's ben ages since i've dinged or windsurfed for the crappy weather / wind

Best thing about a coil board leash is it doesn't drag in the water

+1 for the coiled leash. I bought a small stainless clip and I hook the leash directly to the d-ring on my Ride Engine harness. Doesn't drag when I'm riding and haven't had any issues with snapping back. Next up is to maybe try putting the wing leash on the other d-ring. Side note, always good to inspect both leashes and give them a few rugs to make sure they're good to go.

You can coil any leash, just wrap it tight around a broom stick piece,tie it with paracord or whatever and submerge it in water you just boiled.

I don't like coiled, find them too heavy and they like to slap on the board. I use a 5' comp to back of harness belt and it stays out of water and untangled for the most part.

Been using one of these for nearly 3 years now www.oneoceansportsaustralia.com/accessories/no-logo-waist-leash and no snap back. Just swap out the coil with a new coil from time to time but been perfect to foil and wing with and half the price of some other waist coils.

Been using this one for almost a year. No complaint so far. Very minor pull back when falling off. I like it, it's easy to get the board back in the water, and no drag.

What is best way to connect to waist without a harness? I connect leg wrap to waist belt and it always moves around to front.

UPDATE: Got the Armstrong 8' coiled waist leash. Doesn't get in the way when knee-starting, no snap back, and no drag. It got coiled around my leg a few times when climbing back on the board but not a big deal. A big thumbs up from me!

I did have issues with the board snapping back with a 6ft coiled calf leash, but not with any of the longer leashes I've used.

For the waist to leash connection, I replaced the cuff with a second railsaver , then attached that to a loop around the belt. I used a triglide to keep the string in place.
