After 6 months with a f-one 4.2m on a sup and another half year with a 5m on a foil, I switched over to the 4.8m PPC wing last weekend.

OMG! It's in a whole new league! It pulls like a train and it ultra stable and smooth.

I am 95kg and even though I really like the f-one, I often felt under-powered with the 5m. Forgiving and ideal for learning in gusty conditions, but often frustrating in marginal wind.

My gybes have improved tremendously in just a few sessions. I am now riding comfortably toe-side. The PPC converts every bit of wind into forward drive very efficiently and I love that you can pump it up hard to 8psi (vs 6psi with the f-one).

I think it's the ultimate all-rounder. Good in waves as well as free ride. Build quality of the PPC is tip top.

The downsides?

As I said, it isn't as forgiving. If you bank a turn on the face of a wave you have to be much more precise with your sheeting out otherwise you get pull out of the water. With the f-one, you could trust that you'd loose enough power through lack of rigidity to be a bit lazy with trim.

A minor thing... I feel the valves on the PPC are downgrade from the f-one. They are manual and fiddly. Sometimes hard to unscrew/deflate if you've over-tightened them. I do like that the strut has a second valve though.

The PPC's power also means you need to downsize sooner in higher winds or you will be overpowered. But at the same time I am sure you make that up at the light end of the wind range, though I haven't been out in light winds yet to confirm that.

Overall, I am super stoked.

What are your experiences with the PPC wing?

Yeh I think I did a post on them a while back. Stoked on mine. My boy loves them as well. As you use then more you will actually find they work very well in their upper wind range (so no need to change down). Hardly any back winding, or at the very least very controllable. You just rip upwind.


Due to their flat profile if you let them go on the leash they don't flip and flop about either. And yeh the build, haven't come across a wing as well built to be honest. Yeh those valves do take a bit getting used to but it's a non issue after a while. You get the "knack". And no stupid windows either which it seems is against the grain on the new gen wings coming out lately. Just not necessary. But hey if you think they are needed and buy a wing because of them, then so be it.


It is indeed a very good all rounder. My boy jumps them, they water start very easily (as they are flat and rigid, but they still flag well enough on a wave.


god knows how good the next generation wings will be though from all companies.

I have 5.8 and 3.8. Absolutely stoked with them. Best thing i ever did buying the PPCs.

FYI "the tesla of anything" is not a compliment, It means great ideas but poor quality and mismatched parts.

.... in your humble opinion. anything to add about your opinion on the wing, other than post some inane opinion about an analogy we all understand and used for communication purposes only.

For me the number one most important characteristic is flag out/ drift,handling/ ability to throw around during transitions and wave riding.

How does the PPC compare to a smik in terms of these characteristics? I have only ridden a very beaten ozone wasp v1 and a smik. Really loving the smik but these PPC wings look sweet and loving the NO windows!

If that's your only genuine defining attribute then obviously the lighter the wing the better for flagging and even transitions in really light winds. . So stay with your smik. That being said it's not like the ppc lacks in that department. But you can't get passed basic physics. The direct power gives other advantages in the waves. All depends.

Enjoyed the podcast as well. I've been trying the first and last handle like you said in strong winds and rocketing upwind at speed. (Was mainly using one and three).


You are right about the 3.8. My son and I share the 4.8,3.8 and 2.8. Two days ago I came in well powered on the 3.8 and the boy was walking out with the 2.8. I swapped over and he took the 3.8 out (he only weighs 47kg) in 18- 20 plus winds and handled it fine. He loves the 3.8 for jumping. The 2.8 is a monster in the waves and/or downwinding on waves.



Agreed with the swivel needed for the leash. We have actually had a leash break at the Velcro attachment, and I think that is from the winding up (as my son is continually jumping and learning rotations so it's always in the water being flipped etc).


The valves initially were a pain in the ass, especially having two but you quickly learn how to screw then on and off by holding the plastic ring so the rope doesn't twist.


It allows for really good pressure hence a frigid frame. But you are right about the more flexible tips to spill wind and reduce back winding when a gust / over powered wind occurs. When I first held them up and saw how tight the leading edge and frame was I thought - oh boy this thing is gonna back wind. Nope - well it does like all wings but you can easily adjust and then use this power to crank upwind. The duotone unit I was one would just rip your arms off and you were forced to track downwind - losing ground and speed all the time.



Not sure if you have mentioned this but this rigid frame and direct power access also allows such easy water starts. Hence you not only have a great top end, but you can get going easily in lighter winds on a smaller wing which is perfect for waves.

Ah crap. But hey, it seems the market is asking for them. What I love about the ppc is the obvious durability. That 3.8 already has plenty of hours in it.

I think that is just the logo and happens to be a similar colour to the background. I like the no windows of the Surge.

I was pleased to read about the PPC being the Tesla/Ferrari on the wings! Not just me who is stocked with them!

i have the 5.8 and 3.8 at the moment. I am 90kg, 6'1 but my son and wife are lighter 55-70kg and 5'8-6.
The 5.8 is a powerhouse for 9-11 knots to 20. It's not the biggest wind range but it does is so well especially in the bottom range 10-15knts. After it pulls hard in the arm, harness line would be cool to try. Sam -if you read this- I would encourage you to experiment with a harness to include some attachment points on the centre strut, thks!

it is really light, powerful, stable, rigid, no back wind, really easy to get going. It's got a long strut so back pull is subject to wind although it has 3 back handles to move your hand back. On the positive it has a pretty short wingspan so it's not that cumbersome. My wife and son can still use it and use it most days because it's just so easy to get going in little wind and without pumping. If you pump it at 9knts you're out going!

The 3.8, compared to 5.8, is very much the same, same characteristics as 5.8, but is a lot friendlier to the back arm as it does not pull as hard on your back hand when fully working. Very well balanced between front/back hands. It's a joy to use as it's so easy to pump, and sheet in for max speed and upwind. I can still take it in as little as 15-16knts and get going on it with some initial pumping.

Off the water: build quality is great, high psi is great, nice bags, nice design, dries quickly, leash is a bit long and seem to get in the way, valve is good but I agree the Fone valves are the best (push system).

One thing you don't realise also is how good/large the angle of attack on the wing is. I tried some other (expensive!) wings and realised how much precision was required in sheeting in. Too much and the wing would collapse forward, too little and wind would pour out and you have no chance of going. On the PPC You don't even realise that. So good for manoeuvres and tricks or even to learn on.

we haven't tried jumps yet but we will soon, those wings are going to be great for that. Strong and powerful.
i bought these wings from Jason, wingman WA, and use them in and around Sydney, East coast.

Very happy with the the 3.8. Wouldn't mind a 3rd handle as its a bit of a reach for my short arms when getting going.

Ah bugger. Oh well Suppose it will meet market demands and sell more units. I get it from the companies perspective in that those not in the know will make an entire purchasing decision on that irrelevant factor - but better without them.

1st post and sorry for reviving an older thread.

I'm new to wing foiling, and just bought my first (2nd hand) Surge 5.8 today from the man himself, here in Auckland. It was only after that I saw this post, I thought I'd share here (sorry if this is common knowledge already, but I couldn't find the info on the forum).
