Winging seems more social than kiting, more like the old days of windsurfing. It's much easier to come in and have a break/chat with winging, not so with kiting.
Massive uptake here at Queens Beach, Brisbane, easily outnumbering kites and windsurfers most days with decent wind.

I meet lots of people from windsurfing at the river (melville) curious about winging and giving it a go. Most are enjoying being a beginner again.

It's been growing massively in the last 6 months in Hobart. Great vibe. The trick will be staying keen over winter.

It's coming to the end of the winter for me and numbers definitely dropped , it has been hard staying motivated but the conditions and wind are generally better this time of year so worth while.

I think more of the local windsurfers would of taken up winging if they hadn't of recently bought windfoiling kit and there's still some of the die hard windsurfers still struggling to even accept the wing ! It's definitely slowly taking over and even some of my non water sports friends are going to get some lessons.
Its going to be interesting to see how many are winging this summer .

Thinking back to the early 2000's, in one year it seems to have achieved the growth that kiting made over about 3 or 4 years

UK South Coast. Getting popular very rapidly here, but you still see more kites/windsurfers out on a 15-20kt summer day. It's probably seen more takeup from people that already do a variety of watersports. Most of the local wavesailors are interested, but haven't got around to it yet.

Cost is still a large barrier. Also, a lot of people are set in their ways and do other stuff on the lighter days. Because windsurfing on the flat is boring to a lot of people, they also think winging will be.

I think cost is a huge problem to many who are already invested in other sports. plus it seems tough to get decent conditions to learn the basics initially (Edinburgh). I started in May last year and went out in some awful conditions to just get time on the water, once up on foil loved it. there are a few really good guys inspiring others and a fair bit of interest. I think we are probably trailing on take up compared to you guys on south coast. Still a very strong wind/kite community here.
