Hey all, I'm considering upgrading my alu F-One mast to a Carbon high modulus version, but I dont think I have opportunity to try. The mast is available in 75-95-105cm options, and I'm seriously considering going 105cm.I've been riding a 105cm mast for windsurf foiling for a long time and really liked the freedom it offered. If you've used these tall masts for wingfoiling I would like your opinion!

Me: 194cm, 93Kg, athletic.

My skills: I have about 20-25 wing sessions beneath my belt and can comfortably fly jibes heel and toeside with both feet forward and fly tacks toe and heelside with left foot forward. Currently I'm on a 110L RocketWing, but I have a 75L with straps on order. I want to go more into jumping / freestyle. Riding waves also looks fun to me, but I'm not that mobile, so would be maybe 2 times a year I'd get out to sea, vs 50 on a lake.

Current equipment I use for winging: F-One Strike 5.0, RocketWing 5'10, Phantom 1480 or Levo900, 85cm alu mast.

I have the axis 105. It is super fun to ride up really high and hold your wing at waist level. I only used it a couple of times before I got the carbon 86 mast. I have been doing a lot of jumping and the 105 proved to be weird and large to be hauling up in the air with me. I thought it would be good to pre load for jumping but did not find this to work. I will hold onto it for riding in large open ocean/lake swell. People on 95 masts seem to love them. I think the 86 is where I have settled as the best all arounder for what I do. 75 is a bit short however, can come in handy at shallow spots.

Any other opinions?? I fear the 'swing weight' argument a little. I know the obvious benefits with regards to freedom in carving / glide through lulls & manouvres, but I've never jumped a longer mast.

Ofcourse going with a 95 would be the safer bet, I know a lot of people use them, I have too, but I never had the same feeling of freedom with the 95 as I had with the 105, even though its only 10cm, its like 15% more usable mast length, assuming you keep the bottom 30-35cm in the water at all times.

I ride the Armstrong 100cm a lot. It's great but definitely takes some getting used to. Chances of awkward falls and tocos is real especially if jumping and trying free style tricks if using straps. The leverage also increases chances of breaking something as the forces are extreme. But the error correction time and carve angles are great. In lighter wind it will take a bit more to get going also.

I'm with Foiling the greats.
Remember, progression is always about stretching the limits, then pulling back a little.

I think if you go in waves with alot of shore break then 85cm is best. On my Alu 95cm mast it took around 30 minutes in 2 attempts to get through the shore break. For this reason I'm buying the 85cm Carbon mast.

Is it a lot stiffer than the regular carbon mast?

I've got 72 - 85 - 100 cm Armstrong and use the 85 70% to 30% on the 100 for winging.

I would say go 95. Unless you are riding super powered up mostly and going for max speed etc, the 105 may be too long. Also, your weight brings in more concern for potential torsional wobbles. Another negative of the longer mast is you bury the wing below wind swell energy (unless you are adept to riding proportionally higher on the last). Buried mast also equals more drag, hence FTGs comment about needing more to get up on foil.
I go for the 100 when in deep water with tight wind swell around waist high+. It is insanely fun to bash upwind hunting clusters of swells to turn'n'burn or boost (without the concern for breaches). I'd say the 95 would work just as well for those conditions for myself. The extra 5cm of the 100cm does lead for some eye peeling recoveries/near breaches when de powered on a bomb. 1M out of the water on a 1+M swell going 18 mph, hard to beat the feeling!

If you are going longer F-One carbon get the new High Modulus. I moved from standard 85 carbon to 95 HM carbon and it is the nicest mast I have ridden. I only ride the shorter mast now if its low tide. All win win with these masts. Especially good in short choppy windswell. (I ride it on Phantom 940, 1080, 1280). Advantage of the Phantom is its medium aspect ratio means it not too wide for the flex of carbon masts to be noticeable.

Whats your weight?? Im relatively heavy, so the flex is another thing, I believe the 95 mast is intended for winging, but the 105 mast is intended for kite I might imagine the 105 being less stiff in comparison, also because its inteded to be used with smaller wings etc. The 105 mast I had for windsurfing was a professional racing foil in the 5k euro region, that mast was insanely stiff both in torsion and flex and I believe 2-3mm thicker to withstand windsurfing forces.

I think I'll just have to see if I can test it somewhere, then I'll know for sure.

I can't get enough of my Armstrong 100 definitely my preferred mast then the 85 and the 72 is a last resort if shallow conditions present
