Hey, I'm looking at replacing my starboard wingboard 90l with a gong cruzader diamond as a one board quiver to improve low end and general ease of getting up on foil earlier. I've noticed that for a given volume other brands mid lengths (super k, fone midlength) runs 10cm or more longer than the diamond. How much does the length matter for low end? Other than the general shape, I would guess length and width to play a greater role but would love to hear others thoughts here.

For reference I'm 78kg dry and was thinking of getting the 5'10 92l.

An important factor is what size fits in the car.. My My 5"6' just fits..

Volume more important. Volume= body weight is great so u can get home if wind drops.

Extra volume doesn't not get u on foil easier.

I've found that the 5'10" mark is really close to the sweet spot for midlengths. I put thousands of miles on the Sunova 5'10"x20"x85l Carver last year. This year I've been trying a 6'6"x18" 90l, 5'11"x20" 77l, 5'9"x20" 66l and find that the added length and narrow design on the 90l gives me very little low end gains. It slogs home awesome and if you are really pushing the ultra underpowered limits then you can find some gains there but I don't think most riders will notice a big change in a neutral volume board that is +/- 10cm from the 5'10" mark.

However....

The added length allows you to thin out the board which is nice. That gong is nearly 6" thick whereas the Carver at 5'10" and 85l is 5-1/8" thick. If you ride a short mast that thickness might bother you if you aren't used to it so expect some adjustment. My current favorite board is the 5'11"x20"x77l custom Carver and it's 4-11/16" thick. My next board will likely be 6'3"ish with MAYBE a couple more liters in it but the focus will be on thinning it out even more and optimizing the shape for my style.

So, I think your board choice should be great.

What windrange are you after? I'm the same weight as you and am on the previous version of the 5'6 Cruzader Point XL 87 liters. I get going without too much hassle in 12-13 knots with a 5.5 Droid. If you want ease of use then stick with your current choice, but if you're only looking to ride in 15 knots and up you can easily size down I think, especially considering that the new range has an updated and more efficient shape (allegedly). Regardless of which size you take, midlengths are a game changer for easy take off!

Thanks everyone! All good points. I'm not looking into gaining extreme low wind abilities but 10-12 knots when gusts also are on the weaker side would be nice!

I've tried a 5'10 and a 6'2 100l and the extra length worth it, unless there is constrain in the storing department. It's quite close to my 105 dw 7' in get up and go but without the trouble to store it!!!!
for an older dude, I do not need bigger than 5.5m and can reduce the front wing but i do have a lot of days in the single digit.

I'd take a bit more length and less thickness everytime.
