There is a thread about the Kujira for surf foiling, but if anybody uses them for the wing i would like very much to know their opinion...
What wind/wing/weight they ride it, comparison vs other foils you may have used etc...

I have the 980 but it is too much work for the wing unless it is very consistent strong wind.I would not go far offshore with it.It needs some boardspeed to rise on foil,once up it is fun though :)

What mast (carbon ,alu,old,new) are you using it with?,shim?

I want to replace the 1600 but there is very little info about the 1210 and even less about the Kujira 1440.

I have tried the LOL 1600 and I have the 1210 Kujira. I weigh 86-90kg and the 1210 gets going surprisingly early as there is less drag than on the bigger wings. My bigger foils I could kind of force up with pumping, the 1210 I just keep flat to build a little speed and up it goes.The stall speed is fractionally higher than some of my bigger foils but you get used anticipating it and it forces you to keep it on the boil which it excels at anyways. I really like the way it pumps and turns, it's awesome for proper downwinders.

I use it stock standard alu mast and fuse - no shims. Once you have the board balanced out it just goes.

I ride bays with 1-4 foot wind swell in 12-30 knts. I am interested in the Armstrong HS1550v2 as a replacement foil due to the very sharp and dangerous wing on the Takuma Kujira. Some riders are sanding down their Kujiras, but I like the what I see in the Armstrong build quality online, and the wing looks a lot more reasonably shaped in terms of safety without having to modify the kit. Does anyone have input comparing the two foils? If so, is the Kujira have performance virtues over Armstrong that would make it worthwhile detuning those sharp edges? Also, for my weight, is the HS1550v2 a good size for light (>12 kt) to moderate winds (20-30 kt)? Thank you for your advice.

Just had a chance to try the Kujira 1440 today in 5 to 18 (maybe) knots. The only other foils I have used for winging are the Infinity 84 and 99. The complete Kujira foil (wing, stab, fuselage and mast) are much, much lighter in weight than the infinity foils.

I was surprised how quickly the Kujira got me up on foil -- I didn't have to pump the board just the wind wing. It seems much more efficient with less drag than the big foils, which helps to allow the board to gain speed rapidly and lift on foil. Upwind was amazing -- it pointed, while maintaining speed, at a considerably higher angle than my low aspect ratio foils. Top end was fast enough for me at my skill level (I've gone over 37 knots windsurfing but fast on a foil, which is quite a bit slower than windsurfing [at least for me], can be scary).

Next session I'll try pumping it with the wing held to the side.

Overall for me, it is a stable, fast (great upwind) foil, which will hopefully allow me to progress in the frustratingly gusty conditions (when we get wind) I have to work with.

Here's Dominic Hoskyns riding the Kujira 1210 with the 7 metre Slick in 9 to 12 knots. I've been riding the 1440 Kujira with a 5.5 metre Slick. The 1440 is a beast in light winds and a monster upwind ( lightly sanded down the and rounded the winglets -- no difference in performance but better peace of mind).

Did you end up switching to Armstrong? I'm definitely interested in a comparison b/t the Kujira and either the Armie 1250 or 1550 v2.
Also, besides the sharp winglets, how do you find the build quality of the Kujira? I haven't seen anybody riding them here in the SF Bay, so it's hard to get any insights.

....That was a bad batch of carbon masts which were all too tight. In the US, all Carbon sets are custom fit by the distributor before shipping.

The Alloy sets fit well out of the box. FYI

If you get any looseness in the fuse to wing connection and continue riding like that all the load will be carried by the bolts,eventually they will fatigue and shear.

This applies to all foils, Armstrong did not upgrade to the A+ system (more screws) just because it looked cool.They were getting wobbly connections and sheared screws too.

It is a bad solution IMHO.
Better to make the connection tight and remove the load from the screws.

PS:Araldit is a thickened epoxy sold in most hardware stores in Europe,easy to mix and work with.Perfect for this.Make sure you get the standard (slow cure) and not the quick 5 minute worktime type.

It was to accommodate the load on the wider HA wings and more importantly the riders who are jumping / taking it to the elite level. But yeh cool tip on tightening up fuses. Not that my army shows any looseness at all after, many many sessions.

Agree with that. mcrt has been on about the Armstrong movement/flex for a while which, Armie builds flex into the mast at the foil end with the taper. Any slight movement in foil fuse join doesn't worry me, different strokes for different folks. Axis super stiff setup feels wooden and unresponsive in comparison. When riding I cannot tell the difference between my 2 year old Armstrong and the A+ system.

You are mistaking me for someone else hilly.
I have never complained about Armstrong mast flex (it is way stiffer than my Takuma),my Armstrong setup never had any looseness (i would have fixed it).
In fact i have said more than once that their build quality/materials/weight is the best i have tried.

I did say that Armstrongs were not my cup of tea because i found them boring to ride vs takuma, which is why i sold them.Loosing money,as i always do :(

As for Armstrongs showing loose fuse to wing connections,yes it has happened.Read it on Insta i think.And brand new Armstrongs being loose too, read it on Facebook Armstrong foil riders group.

Not bashing Armstrong as it has happened to most foil brands i know, small contact surface with lots of load.
I have the A+ mod on my Kujira,it does stiffen the connection but it will not compensate a bad fitting one.Epoxy will.I personally cannot stand wobbly foils,feel like dragging seaweed all the time.For very minor wobbles brushing some superglue works well,super thin layer.

Axis and North for example have a big contact surface but it dirties the flow on top of the wing and it compromises compatibility in future designs,no perfect solution.

We tend to defend our brand choice as if we had invested in it.

I have not tried the Kujira with a stiffer mast,i do not know if the playfulness comes from the foil design,flexy mast or both.
A stiffer mast should feel better at high speeds ,i think tow in guys prefer the Alu mast over carbon.
But i keep the foil assembled all the time, alu is a bit of a hassle with corrosion.Any chip in the anodizing close to steel or carbon is a potential trouble spot.

I would not mind buying an Armstrong built Kujira :)
