Aloha Wing Dinger's out there. Here's a quick important announcement from Robby Naish on caring/packing down you S25 Wing-Surfer.

Now the Australian climate whilst it has massive variations is generally not what you would call "really cold" in comparisons to some European and other countries, but we certainly do get cold from time to time.

Just like old school days folding up your mylar sails with PVC windows, we want to try and keep the rolled PVC window un-folded.


Here Robby runs you through the best technique to use to preserve your S25 Wing-Surfer window.

We are expecting the new bags here is Australia/Windgenuity in about the next 2 weeks, and we will be sending them out to the dealer from which you purchased your Wing-Surfer.

So maybe get in touch with them early and let them know you're waiting for yours. It is totally free and you can keep the existing bag you have.

Learnt this the hard way and screwed the windows on my Takuma. Mylar tape is pretty good though eh?

I think it's awesome that Naish are doing this and it shows just what a good brand Naish are.

Another way to prevent that nasty sharp corner folds in the window is to fold it up the way I do.

Once I've rolled the two sides to the center I start from the tail and roll rather than doing bigger folds.. When rolling by the time you get to the window area the kinking angles in the window material is much less than big flat folds.. It still fits in the bag easy.

R&D was probably done in Hawaii..

This issue is only a very cold climate issue.

Well, it is not like PVC windows has been used in sails for 50 years :-)

It would have been easy to design the wing and the graphics so that the window fit in the middle third with the graphics indicating the fold points. Just roll it up and fold at the marked points.

So I guess ozone isn't going to introduce Windows for their Wasp v2 and keep it as light as possible.

Well I think thats a pretty good solution and you get a free bag!

I use a slinghot slingwing with windows and granted its a bigger carry bag and at first I couldn't find any videos how to roll it properly without creasing it.

Kudos to Naish!

Whist it is very unlikely to get any nicks or tiny holes in your Wing-Surfer PVC window it is possible in some extreme instances. I was able to put two minute ones in my personal Wing-Surfer trying really hard and punishing the window by folding it intensely and standing on the folds so I could make this quick "How-To" fix clip. I would imagine majority of Wings out there will not have any issues. This is no different to PVC windows form the early days of Windsurfing and even with the tiny nicks, I would image they still would not fail (this my (JB) opinion and not that of Naish).

But for the sake of an easy fix, please see this very quick vid I did up showing my quick fix.



Please ensure you also watch the video from Naish on correct Wing care and pack down. If you follow these easy steps it is even less likely.

Thanks JB.. I used to fold my sails back in the Wally days.. I never had any issues with the pvc windows back then and Melbourne's not the warmest place.

Robby's comments about "windows" must leave those who bought last year's Naish a little pissed. They obviously can't have nearly as much fun "winging" without the windows and the resale value of their wing just tanked.

Wonder when they bring out an allula wing

I'm Duotone winger and just roll the wing up to the boom and put in the long bag . It's actually a really good way to store the wing and re- inflate . So don't understand the negative responses on the Naish sure your bag might be a bit longer but what's the downside . The new Naish wings are great and I've ridden the new 5.3 a few times . Designs change for the better and yes your old wing maybe not worth as much but that's the same with all wings foils and boards .

I think there is still a market for WIndowless wings, because they are lighter and more durable they make sense for beginner for example.

My favorite brand even have now a Wing line (out of 4) designed specially for beginners, (lighter, softer, more autopiloting shape features), and it has no windows because of the significant weight gain.

I have had wind wings with widows and no windows, weight difference no issue.
I've been on a 6m with and without windows in extremely light wind no big deal and nothing special about my talent.
Windows are just safer and unless one is totally uncoordinated beginners should have windows then they will know when to bail.

The plus for me re windows is not safety but when rolling downwind surfing the troughs . You will always see someone on an opposite tack.The extra weight thing is just stupid and a silly excuse not to have them . With or without windows you'll do the same thing .

Will agree to disagree. Went from Duotone to Ozone loved the lighter weight and fact the Wasp just sat there did not flap around like a banshee
do not miss the windows of the Duotone which are in the middle so gave a very limited view. If they are like windsurfer pvc sails they cloud up and offer a very limited view. I find I can lift the wing occasionally to get a full uninterrupted view when needed or do this

[1] weight difference is an issue for beginners and lightweights (girls)
[2] the light wings also have other weight-saving features (smaller struts, ...), since they also need to be softer there can be a lot of weight saving details

Windows are useful if you are experienced and dont want to lose power before your planing tack/jibe by having to look around. But beginners will not be able to control the wing enough to reliably use the windows.

What I say is that we are going to see more and more specialized wings, rather than the iphone-ish "whine, whine, brand X have now the new model Y out so all the previous ones are worth nothing!". I can see waveriders wanting a super reinforced wing, even it is is heavier.

Yes, and as Robby says it is unlikely. Remember Australia is not regarded as "COLD" in the world. But if you fold it then fold it again on another axis and roll it and so on, this "could" happen. So best to just roll it and not fold it.

I've got a Wasp and a Gong Superpower.

The wasp is joyous to pack down, light and tiny except of the tiny tube connecting the strut to the main bladder. The Gong is painful in comparison..at 6m has the same size outflow tube as the Wasp 4m!

.even with battens removed it goes in my car rolled up every time....I kind of knew it would when I bought it though and I think it'll last longer that way. The windows are useful at times, I've peaked through to see windsurfers in proximity so I think they've paid for themselves already. The Gong is heavy in comparison but that seems to translate to stability when depowered. I like it overall.

I have one of the very first DT 4m so well over a year old and no issues rolling up. I've also used the new 5m lightweight boom DT Echo with new larger windows . This is light and comes in under the Naish 5.3 , I've also used the new Boomless 5m "The Unit" this thing is ridiculously light and would go as far to say the lightest wing on the market . Both wing have a really tight sheet and tamed down leading edge . Gives them about 20% more start power.

3.6m sausage bag is around 120cm long
5.3m sausage bag is around 140cm long

Finally got my bags for my 6.0 & 4.6 guess what you expect from Naish, problem is they are real tight fit just like the usual Naish kite bags! be nice if they had shoulder straps to backpack your wings as some of my winging spots, and sure others too have to hoof it a bit to get there and I'm right back using my original backpack to to transport my wing,then change out when done to my sausage bag they coulda absolutely made them a hair bigger as they are a PIA to stuff the wing in there been kiting 20 yrs so I know how to roll em up well, a zipper woulda been cool too,the bag whole fiasco thing kinda missed the mark really from the get go, really like the the wings though performance wise but the bags have a lot to be desired next year please improve the bag need some backpack style straps and a zipper thinking about mothballing my original bag and sewing the old straps on new bag but really shouldn't have to do that for $900!
