Another video that says lift increases endlessly with speed because it ignores how the rider adjusts the angle of attack. I think the canting over is more about increasing the righting moment. This counteracts the heeling force as the rider maximises the power from the wing.

But what do I know? He's much faster than me!

The foil doesn't know what's up or sideways, but when you run the foil at an angle, the lift vector is not straight up, so you can use the power of the wing to oppose the horizontal component of the lift. Your weight balances the (remaining) vertical component of the lift.

Wonder what the optimum stab width is for 30kts, I'm guessing it would be close to 40cms

I had the top Korean windsurfer who sails at Melville keep up with me in winds of around 14 to 18 knots and he was winging. I was windsurfing on my 100 litre slalom board maybe doing low twenties in the lulls and upper twenties in the gusts.

He is the first wingfoiler that i have had any trouble going past. I think he was gaining on me slightly in the lulls and i was pulling away slightly in the gusts but overall similar.

I think these things have potential to go fast.

He was on a 5.5 Duotone from memory.

I use 33cm stab with 500 Dlab Aero Carve 2.0 (P-165, Aspect Ratio 6.5)

I've been tracking this too. The newer Mikeslab foils 340 and 290 supposedly can maintain speed around 28-29 knots. I emphasize maintain not just peak speeds. There's a short clip on the FB page with someone saying they can get the 290 on foil when powered with a 6m.

That's crazy fast.

^^^ We've talked about that video a lot locally. But I think it fits a different realm. One thing is going fast on flat water and a whole other thing is going fast at Kanaha. Yeah, you have the high winds, but that chop is brutal and you can only go so fast in those conditions. Those used to be my stomping grounds so I know how choppy it is. Even Kai Lenny goes down to the "speed" channel between Ma'alea and Kihei for speed tuns as it's the only somewhat flat water area on Maui if you don't count the gusty Kahului Harbor.
