I've just borrowed a Duotone , Aero Glide, 1595/220 as I'm looking for a light wind foil for winging in around 8 - 13 knots. I was hoping to use it with a 5m Smick. Took it out yesterday in a northerly, gusty 5 - 15ish with the 5m.

Took off no worries in not much wind. But when I was up it was impossible to turn. My board pretty much had no roll sensitivity and I fell off pretty quick. I had my foil mast nearly all the way forward in the box. This is where I have it for my other wings which are a lot smaller. I was thinking about moving it back and using a smaller Stabilizer than the 220 that comes with front wing, and hopefully that will solve my turning problem. I could also feel that when I was briefly going in a strait line I had quite a bit too much lift, and that this might have been contributing to the steering problem.

Just wondering if any one knows anything about this?

I was also thinking the problem might be that the front wing span might be far too wide for the board I was using. 130cm wingspan. 78L Cabrinha Code, 152cm (L). 63cm (W). 11cm (D). I weigh 77kg.

To me the wing looks ridiculous on this board ? See photo.I was wondering if the next size glide down from the 1595 might be a better option using a 6m Handwing in around 8 - 13 kts? It's a 1350

That's right, that foil is too big for winging. It's designed for downwinding on SUPs. In seperate post CraigfromDuotone said that 1305 Glide is the biggest that he'd recommend for winging. I agree.
I've got the 1305 for light wind winging and I definitely don't want to go any bigger. 1305 can turn, but it's still super stable in roll, so don't expect to shred hard on it. 1305 is fun when the bumps are small, but I'd switch down as soon as it's above waist high.

I'm 75 kg and ride the same 78l Cabrinha Code. My light wind front foil is a Gong Veloce V2 XL (roughly 1300 sq cm, 100cm span). With a 6m 3024 Dlab Slick I have no problems with 8-13 kts. Also have a Veloce V2 XXL (1500 sq cm, 107 cm span). It might buy me an extra knot on the low end but it's hardly worth it (I use it with my FD+).

130cm sounds way too straight line downwind P & G too me. FWIW, to get my XXL to turn quickly (regardless of rear stab size or fuselage length) I use more of a flat pivot turn, and not as much of a traditional carving turn. I've seen really good wingers get these large span wings to turn tight but same thing, more of a flat turn technique

Yeah that's huge, you don't have to go high aspect for light wind unless you are trying for a dedicated flag out micro bump ride. I'm 87kg and my lightwind foil is the Cloud IX fs1150. Super lifty for the size and still fun to ride in the light stuff!

How many sessions have you had on that big foil?

I use a Sab Leviathan 1150 that is super lifty with a little less span...turning is certainly not its strong suit at all but for getting up and foiling in super light wind it gets me a bunch more sessions than I would have without it.

And it does turn, I just need to adjust if I haven't been on it for a while...slower, larger radius.

For me the biggest downside is the ride if the wind picks up and it's choppy, as all that lift means you really feel every little bump out there...I just got ordered an even bigger version with about the same span as the one you rode, since summer wind here is typically really really light and I'd rather not invest in an 8m wing. I'll live with the compromises if it means I can foil more days...

As others have said, this is just built for a different application. It can be used, but you need to adjust your technique and style to suit it. It is going to want to turn its own radius and will buck out from under you if you try to deviate that course too much. My experience is that these foils like to very centered. When you turn you cant bank them too much and when you pump you need to be right on top of them. If you get too far off of centered, they will go in the other direction.

The board width shouldn't really matter too much.

I have an 1100 span foil like this that I ride (11 AR) and its fun for riding tiny bumps and pumping, but its never going to be as maneuverable as an 8AR foil.

I found out yesterday why Craig from Fanatic recommends nothing bigger than 1305 for winging. I got the 1595 going but it felt terrible. Thx

Also, what wind speed do you use the 1305 in , and with what size board and handwing and what's your weight ?

The Carve 2.0 1430 may not have as good a bottom end as Glide 1305, but it is very playful for its size and lots of fun. Just another option to consider. I think Craig at Duotone loves using it too. I was out in 13 to 15k yesterday with 4m Unit and had a ball.

Once I got a downwind board and tried it winging, I stopped using my downwind foil for winging.

I know someone over here who use to do that and it was good. Apparently he had easier take off on his downwind board than the winging board he had at the time, which was a similarly size. He could then a smaller size handwing than what he'd need on his winging board in same wind strength.
