Harness is advised but my struggle was when unhooked in gybes and worst when doing water starts. The violence that it was being pulled from my hand was too much, even when trying for max depower. There's a lot of power available there and I felt like the 1.7m would be a more appropriate for anyone legitimately at 30 knots or higher.
TBH in those wind speeds I'd just buy two and go out with both. That's what I chose to do when replacing my BRM with Ozone's. I ordered a 1.9m and 2.4m and I intend to have both with me on the water. If I was doing BRM I'd go 1.7m ka'a and 2.5m kanaha.
My recommendation is to stay hooked in while getting going in strong winds. It really makes everything more chill and comfortable. Maybe the bungee line I use makes it easier. It's nice to just one hand it casually and hop to my feet.
I've only had one session in winds quite that strong and I swapped between the v1 1.8 and 2.9M Maliko. The 1.8 went insanely well.
I just scooped up a used 2.3M Ka'a for those 24-32 type days. The 3.2 Kanaha is a bit much in that range, but I'm a lightweight and picky. For the 30 plus days, the 1.8 fits the bill.
Always keeping a backup in a backpack for most sessions.
Thanks for the input, it is difficult to select the sizes based on the BRM web wind range and sizes.
The range does not seem to overlap in the Kanahas, but matches better in the ka'a (skipping one size).
The sizes around 3m seem to have a range comparable to my Naish Morph, 18-28 knt (mostly 20-25, feeling perfect). But the 4m sizes have a much shorter range (on the web) than the Naish 4m ( 14 to 22knt) in my experience.
I'm waiting for the kanaha 5.5m so let's see how that goes. From there, the next, maybe the ka'a 2.3, I'm not convinced on high aspect for strong winds, the tips tend to fold a bit in strong gusts.
