I've been winging for 4 yrs + and have been settled on a one board quiver for 18 months+ . It's an Old school Naish hover 4'10 22.5" 60L. Im 72 to 80kg !! I use 4 and 5m, 790cm ar 10 with v. small tail, 12+ knots, strapless and into waves and bumps. My board feels great in the air and is surfy and nimble. I've never thought it's great for take offs. We often have very gusty conditions and I often miss a gust as it's not efficient getting up. When learning I went 95, 85, 75 and settled on 60. I don't chase light wind but my conditions have big tides, rips and lots going on. I find my board very easy to balance on in some very challenging conditions.
Wondered if anyone experienced moved towards having more litres? Would this help me get up and away quicker in a gust?
Most boards with more volume are too wide, I wouldn't want a wider board than mine. Any production narrow but not too long?
Ideally 5'2 to 5'4, 21" 70L. Nothing out there? Custom board would be very limited on resale if I didn't like it. my prone board is 18" wide and is awesome.
Any thoughts?
It all depends what you are after and your riding style. I like jumping and riding swell. (Ground swell, not wind swell). Narrow, long boards are not for me. And if the board doesn't sink completely I find them hard work. I am 90kg, had 75l board that was super hard work because it floated too much and was fighting the board wanting to float up in chop was super difficult. Went down to 60 and was dramatically easier. 4'11x22" I use it from 15knots upwards. For super light wind I have sup foil board but I jump into the small board as soon as I can. Don't enjoy the bigger board.
with all the new high aspect foils you can get up super easy and stall speeds are incredible so staying on foil it's not an issue.but that will depend how light do you want to go.
know plenty of people loving the narrow boards, I had one and sold it.for me was only good to get on foil in super light wind, they do that amazingly well, but everything else was a compromise. So again, it really depends what you are after. Plenty of good options.
