Help wanted from the brains trust....the rubber on the base plate of my Axis setup has come off. I have replaced it with new rubber but just cannot achieve a decent adhesion of the rubber to the aluminium. I have clean surfaces between both, and have been trying Sikaflex Contact Adhesive but after a session or two it starts coming off.

Would like some advice on what alternative glue I could use that would work.

The rubber pad came off my Axis base plate as well. Don't know if they have anything related to this in Australia, but I used Loctite PL Marine Adhesive/Sealant. Has held up perfectly for the last 4 months

Got the same problem. Where did you guys get new rubber?

This is designed for rubber to metal gluing. Used on car door seals.

Went to Clark Rubber and bought some 1mm matting.

Shoegoo works well to bond traction pads back onto boards, could also work for your application, although it is a bit thick and hard to spread.

MS Polymer or polyurethane glues work wonders, but you must be sure to apply them in the thinnest layer possible.

They are polymers that cure with moisture, so if the glue layer is thick, its outside will cure first, forming a waterproof layer that will prevent curing in the middle, and the glue won't hold. That's the main reason I have seen when people failed to glue things with these glues.

The way I use polyurethane glue for small areas like the OP's is to put a blob of glue on a plastic plate, mist with a spray bottle and mix quickly and thoroughly before spreading on and clamping or bagging.

Have to be quick because it foams rapidly and and can make it hard to clamp accurately without the two pieces walking around.

Clamsmasha, it works and it is practical, but it is not as strong as a thin layer. The "foamy" part is not very strong, what "shi thouse" was looking for.

E.g: "Parts being glued with polyurethane needs to have a tight fit to be strongly joined. polyurethane is not a good gap filler. Although it is sometimes advertised as gap filling, tests show that strength is reduced when the glue line is thick. When setting it froths up and the froth, although gap filling, is not strong."

Or he could just use epoxy, but it will harder to remove if needed.

I had little success with the Sikaflex Contact Adhesive....however, I have to admit a big fault on my behalf. Not thinking at the time, but I applied the adhesive to both clean faces (aluminium and rubber pad) and gave them time to dry (off-load their solvents) before bringing together. The major issue, and it only occurred to me whilst I was trying to get the old adhesive off the aluminium face to ready it for the new rubber was there was no old adhesive stuck to the old rubber.

So hopefully this time, after rubber the shiny surface off the new rubber face with 240 grit and to hence score the new surface that this time the adhesive may hold!
