In the theme of 'lost Perth', I thought I would start a topic that specifically recalls the past years of windsurfing in WA.
I found 2 newsletters in my junk that I thought I would stick on here for all to see.
These reflect the sailing scene of the time.
The first one is from July 1983 almost 32 years old!
Things to note in this issue is the size of the racing calendar!
Also I wonder how many of the entrants in the mid winters series are still sailing I could only pick 3 names?

Not sure now if you could get away with a ladies fleet and call some light weight and some medium weight !

Galvo dusts of the wave gear every now and then for trips up north..and has said he would participate in wally racing again but prefers the drop-in daggerboard

I don't know who's got it now but WABSA (now Windsurfing WA) used to have a box full of photos, news stories etc of the entire history of windsurfing in W.A. through the 80's and early 90's. I remember going through it all one day and it's pure gold!

I thought I heard that it was - or much of that was damaged or misplaced relatively recently? I assumed that was why the 30th anniversary for the association was a few years late. WCAWA and WABSA were formed almost simultaneously give or take, as I understand.
Whatever is left should really be preserved and replicated in hard copy

There are several archive boxes from WABSA and the wave sailing association. Not many photos but numerous old annual programs and news letters etc. If you search in google some of the old web sites are still kicking around too. Getting all this history online is on the ever growing to do list.

Given some of the hair cuts etc, I'm not sure most people would want the old photos shared.

Hi Snides, I picked up my name as 13 th in MHW from 1983 Midwinters.

Spelling is is incorrect it should be Richard Grauaug.. Quite impressed I beat Aidan Nicolson !

Anyway gave up windsurfing for over 20 yrs now back into it !

I remember a young Snides who sailed 7 ft gun style..surfboards in the early 1980 s quite impressive !

Great to see you back! I suspect a few crew from back then have been and gone and now are back..
me? 35 summers and winters so far and still twitching for the next sail!
I remember sailing a 6'6" at dutchies a few times with a 3/4 windsurfer rig.. that was fun
converting surf boards by gluing a nylon block on to the deck and then glassing over the whole deck
and guessing the positions of footstraps - that always seemed to pull out at the worst moment!

I wonder where some of the other guys and gals got to? like Nick Poll and Rob Welbourne ?
Nick was the wests equivalent to Robby Naish for quite some time as I recall.

I understand Rob Welbourne lives in Sydney.

Nick Poll is a geologist and mining entrepreneur and lives in Perth.

I am told by people Nick still windsurfs.

sorry to intrude but it is sorta the same thing. recent post card bought in Dunsborough.
